A team of special operatives, known as the H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force), is sent to San Nicolas Island to investigate deadly cult activity taking place in an ancient monastery. Their boat, the only way back, is destroyed by patrols, and the team soon learns that the cult plans to systematically destroy nearby Los Angeles. The operatives, now unable to return whence they came, are then left to fight their way into the monastery on the island, and eventually put a stop to the cult's activities.

I don't know about mods, but there are several user-made levels for Rise of the Triad, but unfortunately not on Mod DB at the moment.
At least 3D Realms has plenty of them on their ROTT site: 3drealms.com
Hey, I remember this game!
Rise of the Triad is an excellent game. Even though ROTT used an old engine (from Wolfenstein 3D), it still had many good features. The game engine wasn't the original Wolf3d engine but Apogee Software added new things to it such as floor and ceiling texture mapping, touchplates, animated textures, elevators and even dynamic lighting (sort of). The enemies could do special moves (play dead or steal your weapon or armor). The player was able to choose a player character. Each of them had unique abilities (there were differences in eg. speed and strength). The graphics, music and levels were brilliant. All in all, Rise of the Triad was a good game but was underrated because of Doom.
god i remember serial battling with my boss for HOURs on this game... always hated the damn heat seeking rockets
I like this game... I played it when I had 8... I enjoy, was one of the first games with "Akimbo" (Use two guns) and you only can carry one bazooka (staff or Baseball bat). Was more realistic than Doom :)
