My first "real" Half-Life map. You start out in a crashed elevator and have to fight your way to the surface.
This is my first big map project for Half-Life.
I already had some experience from messing around in the Hammer editor for HL2, and decided I wanted to make something in HL1. I followed some tutorials for J.A.C.K, and then started working on this. It took me about a week to make, and I am pretty proud of what I have. I do plan on making more maps for practice and for fun, and also plan on getting into modding.
Anyways, you start out in an elevator that crashed, and you need to get to the surface. That is sort of the gist of it, any feedback on what I could improve is greatly appreciated!
P.S. I wasn't able to figure out how to get hint brushes to work, because for some reason I couldn't get the zhlt.wad file to work even though it was imported (it threw an error and didn't compile the map). I'm sure it won't be too big of an issue, however I would like to get it to work (for the future), so any suggestions on that are greatly appreciated.
Not bad for a first map. There are lots of empty space and it looks more like a draft than a full release. For example you enter a completely empty room that has a wood colored block in it and nothing else. You can tell it's supposed to be an office with a desk but it doesn't really look like one. Also you should ease up on crates, I know it's tempting to fill the rooms with them but they should be placed sparingly and meaningfully.
I liked the detail on the catwalk towards the end, debris and beams sticking out, it looks nice. The outside area looked nice too, the destroyed buildings were fine and with some unique textures they would look even better. You should use more varied textures in general, all the grey and brown walls make the locations look the same.
Thank you for the feedback! I'll keep this in mind for my next map
