Post tutorial Report RSS How To Reduce crashes in Fallout 3

A quick and easy guide to hours of crash/freeze free gameplay

Posted by on - Intermediate Other

Most of the crashing and freezing in fallout 3 is sound or processor related. Here are the instructions on how to fix it

PATCH 1.7 REQUIRED !!!
Here is a quick and easy youtube vid demonstrating how to do fix the fallout 3 crashes
and subsaquently install mods

Note
watch this in HD 720p full screen for a clearer understanding

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 (Fallout Prefs it is sometimes called)
Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

If you still experince problems try this

nstead of iNumHWThreads=2, change it to iNumHWThreads=1

Another thing which may be causing problmes is the autosave function
I have heard a lot of people say they crash as soon as they leave or enter a building/area
This should help a bit

Please remember that extensive hours of gameplay will crash the game but that happens anyway

hope this solves some problems

I tried every fix, but on a big save, it still crashes often. ******* buggy game. But updating all my drivers (esp. for the sound card apparently) and limiting to two cores did seem to help, so it's definitely worth doing.
