State of the mod
I wanted to talk about the release date. I started this modification almost four years ago in 2012. A lot has changed and I have reworked on things and concepts a lot. The modification has expanded more than I thought it would (4 races, 17 realms, ~18 natives, ~40 maps +2608 techs...). People have offered their help which in turn has helped it take less time. However, it's nowhere from being done anytime soon, so I currently have no release date planned. I never liked the idea of having several releases but if I had a smaller first release then I could focus more on certain things and get it out sooner. I will leave it up to you guys to vote in the comments: a release sooner with less content or a full release in the distant future. If I were to have a first release it would have around half the maps, less natives, and the realms I have completed the most:
- Men: Arnor, Gondor, Harad, Rohan
- Elves: Lindon, Lothlorien
- Orcs: Goblins, Isengard, Mordor
- Dwarves: Erebor, Iron Hills
Please let me know about what you would like to happen by writing a comment.
I thought that I might say what I have done lately for the modification.
Ages
Lately I have redesigned a lot of core aspects. The ages being one. Tolkien divided middle earth history into eras/time periods called "Ages". I thought that I could just apply each era to an age ingame and have the mod focus on the third age (when the events of the Hobbit and LoTR happened), but I never was really happy with it. Originally I had players start in the "First Age", then age up to "Second Age" then "Third Age" and finally "Fourth Age", 7269 years of history in total! obviously that is too long, the other problem is that AoE is known for having players go through five different ages, not four. So I decided to take out the era called "first age" (I never really added much involving the first age of middle earth anyways) and divided the "Second and "Third Ages". Now players start in an age called "Second Age", then you go to "End of the Second Age", then to "Third Age" and then "End of the Third Age ", and finally "Fourth Age" (It's still 6682 years of history but it is more manageable). To have the age up icons match the names of each age they look like this:
(even though I didn't explain it too clearly and it sounds complicated it really isn't)
obviously making this change was huge since all technologies, units, and cards were centered around the first age system I had. I still haven't completed implementing it, but I'm working on it
Politicians
Another aspect that I have reworked a lot has been the politicians. Balancing the existing ones, adding and redoing old ones. Since each race ages in a different way, I'm trying to keep it simple and not too complicated.
Realms
I have mostly tried to complete the existing main ones (Gondor, Rohan, Harad, Erebor...). Making new portraits, texturing buildings, and balancing units. I also have made standard shared home city cards for each race. I realized that it has been almost a year since I first explained about the different races in the game. I really need to explain one by one like I said I would.
Also a big thanks to the wonderful Lesketin who helped by offering his textured units for Rohan. it was really kind of him and also elevates the modification with higher unit texture quality.
I also have been working on something that is really cool but I will explain about it in a different post later on.
Please dont hate me book fans!
Your project is so ambitious that I worry it won't be completed at all. :-)
My vote goes to an earlier release.
Thanks for your feedback. I think you're right about it being ambitious. XD
hey man, if you need help feel free to contact me im not a very experienced modder well not for aoe3 :P never done textures really but if you need help with the tech tree ai,the creatiing units links just ask :P
Oh darn. I didn't wanted to downvote you but up vote you. I agree but the cellphone doesn't I guess. Early release.
First a small release and later everything else, maybe as standalone addon.
Well it wouldn't be a "small release", just a "smaller than before" release. Thanks for your feedback.
haha sorry, okay.
No problem, I think that everyone put that XD. You're fine.
early release with less content is always fine. really want to try this even if its not complete, as long as one or two side are.
Yes I would have to get the AI working to have something to play against. Thanks for your feedback.

Same for me, regarding all the stuff already done..early release ;) (sorry , posted as guess)
Okay but I never said an early release XD I said Sooner. Don't worry everyone seems to have put the same. Thanks for your feedback.
Early release. Too many good and ambitious mods went unreleased for years because the creator didn't want to release it until everything is done, in the end every mod died. I'm not saying you are gonna do it too, but just to be safe, the community has been burned too many times...
Again it would be a sooner release, not early release. I agree, I used to work for another mod before this that died pretty quickly. I dont think that I will give up on this mod because I have put so much into it. If I were to hypothetically "give up" then I would release what was done though. But that wont happen :) Thanks for your feedback.
An early release is better to show what you've done so far, which i think is already amazing. Moreover you'll receive feedback from players and it will allow the mod to become more popular, it deserves it.
Yes I think that it would be good to see how players react to certain features (especially economic features). Most likely there will be some things that I will have to change because the players won't like them. Thanks for your feedback.
Early realease. As others have already said, over ambitious mods often die off and it's such a shame. I have been silently following your project for a couple years now and it looks so promising.
Additionally, an early release will draw attention and maybe other modders will offer their help?
Thanks for being faithful waiting all this time! I know that its been long. Modders have helped me, especially with 3d stuff (which I have no idea about). Thanks for your feedback.
Early release please; I've been waiting since AoE III came out for a mod like this so I would love to see how things have come along.
Forth Eorlingas!
Thanks for your patience and feedback.
OMG! No way! You literally went through every comment and replied! If only the big business had such customer support; what a world that would be...
I normally try to respond to comments whenever I can, unless they are the typical comment "dude when is the mod coming out?" XD
Haha, well said XD. I think patience left this Earth along with the elves ;)
Early release, then update it NE-style (with version, not patcher)
Thanks for your feedback :)
Sweet info!
I would love for an early release that allows us to maybe try messing around with two factions, so we can see how they work. And see how all the mechanics jell together, and hopefully help bug hunt. Good luck
There would be more than just two realms. I have almost finished the ones I said in the article. Yeah unfortunately I'm sure that there are bugs unfortunately. Thanks for your feedback.
As I am a modder myself I would vote for an Early release. The best things concerning releasing a mod early, is that you can get a feedback or find bugs before too much content is added. Also as some others said in their comments, is that often many ambitious projects have been in the works and suddenly got stopped without having any public release which is always sad since, even if the devs stop working on a project, other people can continue their work ;)
Anyway I am really looking forward to this mod! I was a developer in MERP for Skyrim so you understand that seeing another lotr mod is always nice! I just hope you don't have any copyright issues as well as we had...
Another thing you could consider in the future, is to use an engine perhaps the 0 A.D. one to create a total conversion there which could eliminate all limitations from the current engine.
Sorry for the big comment and good luck !
Thanks for your response. I saw the mod you are working on and it is very cool. I dont play skyrim but I appreciate the beauty of it. Yes I believe that many mods die out unfortunately. What do you mean copyright issues?
For the copyright issues, is that we got a Cease and Desist letter from Warner Bros that's why the mod stopped. Apparently, Warner Bros doesn't allow the creation of digital material such as mods or games that have the Lord of The Rings theme. We even had a lawyer that defended us but at the bottom line we were a lost cause at least legally... I hope WB doesn't contacts you as well.
I vote for an early release. As others have already said, Your project is quite ambitious and wide in scope, I would recommend releasing the mod in smaller parts.
The main advantage that I see from this method will be player feedback.
Yes I think I agree. I will have a first release in the future to help see the community's feedback. Thanks for your feedback.
An early release will be good as long it is playable.
Absolutely. I wouldn't release anything that isn't playable ;) Thanks for your feedback.
An early release would be the best way to keep the followers of this mod interested as well as to give them another thing to do in their spare time.
Sooner release*
Yes I agree that it would help people get interested in it. It would also help people spread word of this mod if they could play it.
sooner release would be finde if you add futher on the complete release with all realms :-)
