Since 1.8 is still a significant time away, we're going to have to stop being as secretive about it as we have. We'll provide information about it as we go, but we'll keep actual details secret. So, for example, we could say “added two new colours” without saying which ones, or “testing experience and leveling to see if it's fun” without giving details on exactly how it works.

The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.

Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.

So wait, all these new features are actually free mods made by the community?
And Mojang is taking all the credit for them?

You are getting really annoying really fast. No one forces anyone to make mods, and who knows... maybe they see some cash from it later.

I agree with Macacos, it still is a **** move, regardless. Even though any one person isn't forced to create mods, they instead make them out of their own free time - and for someone to take credit for another's own work, yes it is a **** move.

hey, guys.

the pistons people SUBMITTED the idea to mojang. Jeb_ said he will consider submitted ideas.

they did not take it. they have it handed to them on a silver platter.

and it probably wasn't even on a silver platter, as they'd have to re-code it to work with Minecraft's source code.

The pistons are not the only thing they took from the community and you know that better than anyone else.

like what?

also, do not forget, while mods are good, they limit mojang. mojang even say they refuse to look at mods, as they do not want to be tempted.

While some of the mods were implemented, case in point pistons, the modder who made it did in fact submit it to Mojang. Also, they give permission for Mojang to use it, so Mojang isn't doing anything wrong.

Its about time a major update is being released, the trickling stream of new stuff is fine but it goes stale quick. Good to see so many mods being implemented and one maybe two original ideas? Either way having Terraria and Nightman Games' new game around is bound to be good, a little competition pushes out lots more content :)

Sounds good.
I hope it will be more like a 3D Terraria after 1.8, with randomly generated dungeons and chests with rare items.
NPC villages would certainly be great; my hopes is that the NPCs will mine for themselves and generally have A.I: that kind of simulates other players (i.e. they dig and build stuff, and aren't just people-looking mobs that spawn in procedurally generated villages that don't change over time).
