We are glad to publicly announce the release of The BattleGrounds 2 1.1b, a new version of the Revolutionary War Mod for Half-Life 2!
Among many changes, bug fixes and new features, the voice command menus have been extended to contain tactical voice commands such as "Flank left!", "They are behind us!" to make up a total of 18 voice commands and one battlecry, now bound on a seperate key, C. New weapon sounds echo over the battlefields. All now 13 maps have been revised and polished for this new release. The melee hit detection has been increased greatly to the satisfaction of both devs and players.
Battle it out now as either officer, soldier or rifleman on the British or American side and seize control of the thirteen colonies!

Yeah seriously, I installed this at least mod at least two years ago and I have seen no improvement. Don't even get me started on the map design and graphics, it looks like the models were direct ports from the original Battle Grounds, and the maps remind me of Doom II.

When comparing BG2 maps to Doom II, I was not isuggesting that the maps are dark and full of demons, but they look a decade or two old. Kthxbye

I'm sure your 1337 skills put this mod's mapping to shame. Not. The maps are pretty good considering how optimized they have to be, sounds to me like you don't know what you're talking about. Oh, and I love this mod, good work guys.

Awww look at that, Christensenct must have bought a PS3 and is now depressed so he complains about everything that doesn't look like Heavenly Sword. Christ man, here's something for you that it might take you a long long time to understand:

Gameplay
------------------------
Graphics

= Gameplay over graphics. We don't play BG2 to simulate an actual real Revolutionary war. We can do that by joining a re-enactment group. We play BG2 because it's fun as hell, not because the models look like they've been bukkaked by bumpmaps.

I think Christensenct's criticism was valid myself, even if othrers don't personally agree with it. The models do seem a bit lazily done, the gameplay isn't earth-shattering (though its kinda fun occasionally). The map designs, though I'm no mapper, are also OK rather than great.

Asking a critic to front up with evidence that they could do better basically makes the act of criticism pointless - if you read a review of a game, movie or book which is critical the immediate reaction isn't "Let's see you do better then, Mr. Reviewer!" as that doesn't move anyone on at all. Expertise can help in forming a more respectable opinion but it isn't crucial to forming an informed view. I.e. We don't expect movie critics to be movie makers, we just expect them to state their opinions from a base of reason.

Gameplay over graphics. We don't play BG2 to simulate an actual real Revolutionary war. We can do that by joining a re-enactment group.

- You've taken that to an unreasonable extreme - sure, you could join a reenactment group, if you live in the United States, but people play games for different reasons; mainly as a pass-time I would think.

We play BG2 because it's fun as hell, not because the models look like they've been bukkaked by bumpmaps.

- Classy ending, but your point is reasonable. Perhaps for some people the graphics impinge on the enjoyment of the experience. I'm sure you'd agree that advances in graphics have made new, better types of gameplay possible.

I wonder what a Halo fan would say about BG2. Considering the sales of the franchise you may even be one yourself.

Let's see, earth-shattering gameplay? Well "earth-shattering" is not something I'd describe too many FREE games with in the first place. Second, how many FPS set in the Revolutionary war even exist? Pretty much zero, so if something that's never been done before isn't "earth-shattering" then I'm not really sure what is. And third, who says something has to be terribly innovative to be fun anyway? I sure hope Halo fans don't because their favourite franchise is selling hideously well for a game that could be described as Unreal Tournament Lite and still be a generous comparison.

I agree -- many people play games as a past-time. Not as a real-life simulator. I don't recall anyone ever complaining that Chess didn't look very much like a real-life battlefield.

I don't agree, actually, with your closing statement. No new and better types of gameplay have been created because of advances in graphics, since the generation 2D went 3D (N64). I mean Perfect Dark did many things that no FPS even today -- including its own sequel even -- do, and that was probably almost a decade ago. And you know, Perfect Dark would have been every bit as great even WITHOUT its great graphics (retrospectively). For further example take Counter-Strike Source; a lot of CS purists still prefer Counter-Strike.

Graphics are the last thing on the checklist. I think this is obvious when you have Nintendo's Virtual Console for example delivering thousands upon thousands of age-old games to peoples' fingertips every week. Or when you have the DS constantly PSPwning Sony's handheld graphics-powerhouse month after month.

From this generation of consoles I only own the Wii, so I'm with you on the whole gameplay>graphics score. I was just trying to be even-handed. Some people are very visual and really appreciate graphical whizz-bangery, but I'm only really in that boat when the gameplay brings nothing new to the table - as with this mod.

I guess people are only arguing these points because they feel slightly, only slightly, disappointed with the long development time and the comparatively poor graphics the mod sports when compared to other non-professional productions.
