Now we created a moddb-page for our Portal mod. We started developing and hope we can release it as soon aas we can. But we need help!

Portal CombatPortal Combat is a Portal mod which combines VALVe's Portal Tecnology with an unique combat system.
Now our moddb-page is up and you can watch our mod.

Never going to happen. Valve's portal code uses a lot of VPhysics functions, which aren't available in the SDK.

Unless you've got $10,000+ for a copy of the full source engine, you won't make anywhere near decent Portals.

Exactly. People will never code a good enough Portal gun. Valve's gun isn't just simply a weapon_portalgun.cpp, it's gunna have a heck load of other coded stuff too.

Don't waste your time on this mod. If you're determined then you should of just made a prototype of the Portal gun first. Because if you make all your maps, then realise your gun sucks, you see you wasted your time.

Something to think about.

I say the go for it and if it works, GREAT! If it doesn't, then they have learned something and (i would hope) enjoyed the ride.

Not only is that comment rude, condescending and arrogant, it is the kind of 'don't even try, because I can't do it' thinking that stops people from getting anywhere in life.

I say, go for it. Have fun with it. If you fail you learned one of a million ways NOT to do it, and you're one way closer to finding it out.

Hey, one doesn't innovate by running away from an obstacle. Valve wouldn't even exist if they held that kind of attitude, neither would many other companies, modders, or indie developers.

I wouldn't say it's immposible, but replicating the Portal gun would be immposible to do, it won't end up the same however you look at it and will be considered a cheap copy, if you're making Portal style game with combat, try focusing on making a more a unique type portal weapon that can help make the combat more unique too.

Although you're probably gonna need more then just a mere coder, you'll need a skilled coder who has some experience working with Source.

Also if it's gonna be a HL2 mod, be sure to change the game it mods to HL2 instead of Portal :)

Technically you can port over the portal gun into HL2. There are descriptions on how. Getting it into L4D may prove a bit tricker at this point in time.

And then I thought about it a little longer. Since impulse 101 brings all the weapons over to portal there wouldnt really be a need to do vice versa. Rather than leaving the physics as the difficult thing....you can leave the AI as the open end.

I should note that while I do consider myself somewhat competent with 2D art, I'm not exactly good with textures or actual custom paintings. If you're looking for concept art or a texture artist, you'd definitely be good to look elsewhere.

Logos, site designs, icons, layouts for screenshots (provided they want any), and yes.. wallpapers. I take pride in wallpapers too, thank you.

And yes, I'll admit I'm definitely not the best, nor can I do a lot, I'm just telling them if they need something I can do, I'd be more than happy to help and I ask nothing in return.

By the way DeathCaller, those models you did for Shadow Invasion: Gundam are looking very nice!

If it's a "Portal Mod", it'll just be a cool map pack.

It's not that you won't get a coder, it's that Portal isn't open source like Half Life 2 is. You CAN'T code for it. And adding your own Portals to any other game is pretty much impossible. You could do the camera effects and teleportation, but you'll never get the physics.

Good concept, but without a core coder you're doomed to failure. As onequarterlife keeps mentioning, coding the Portal gun from scratch is gonna be a real pain, and you need someone really solid to get something that's even close to comparable.

Scrounge up a solid team and check back.
