Today is a big milestone for Unknown Worlds: we've just released the NS2 "Engine Test" to everyone that has pre-ordered the game!

This is the first version of the game and game engine where you can run around on a couple small maps and fire the rifle at animated dummy targets. It isn't supposed to represent gameplay for NS2 (or really, any gameplay at all!) but serves to help us test our technology to make sure we get it running smoothly on a wide variety of computers.

We've built a couple small maps which give you an idea for the art style, look and atmosphere that will be present in the game. You'll spawn as a marine with your rifle and be able to explore and fire at pop-up targets. You'll be able to connect in multiplayer as well, although it doesn't include any game code yet. It also includes the main menu and the first of our music, which will start to give you an idea of the overall look and feel of the game.

Our main goal of the Engine Test is just that - to test the engine. There is a bewildering array of PC hardware and configurations out there and with no in-house testing or QA team, we want to get feedback from you guys to make sure the game runs smoothly for you. There are bound to be problems, but as with our many Editor and Spark SDK releases, we were able to fix problems much faster with feedback and users then if we kept everything to ourselves.

We expect the majority of feedback to be in the graphics performance and graphics compatibility areas but feedback of any kind will be quite helpful for us. Much more of the game is working than what we are releasing initially, but we also need to take it one step at a time.

Download NS2 Engine Test

We hope you enjoy this first look at the technology behind NS2 and are looking forward to your feedback!

The bad thing about this is, some people don't know if they can run it (I can, but let me finish), and they don't want to preorder unless there's a demo or something. And they can only get an engine test if they preorder. So they're stuck.

But yeah, can you add it to Steam soon? Because I don't want to preorder unless it's directly from Steam.

I thought it was added already? When I started the engine test, steam popped up immediately with the steam ingame thing...

Search "Natural Selection" on Steam. The only result that is related is the first game, which was a mod.

You can't buy it on steam, but to open the engine test you gotta open steam and it auto connects to the steam servers and uses your steam account.

They will probably release a demo when development gets further along. At the moment this is an engine test after all.

Just tried the test looks like a great engine, keep up the good work.

The game has been confirmed to be linked into Steam, but it is not on sale nor is there a free demo out yet. It is still fairly early building, and many real gameplay features were stripped out of this engine test build.

So, feel free to test if you've pre-ordered (and be ready to test, it's fairly buggy/raw). For the rest, chill out and wait for upcoming news.

That's how I feel.

I LOVE NS. But I'm afraid my money may be wasted on a game that is very different from the first. The alien commander, changes to Gorge and Lerk are all nice and seem more class-specific than before, but is it going to be fun to play now that aliens are less able to be rouge as before?

I'd really like to just be able to walk and shoot around as a Rine and get the feel of it. Then I could decide to buy it or not. Hence- a demo!

Preordeing directly from steam means less money for the devs... Think about it.

Yea but it also gives people a sense of security. Hey, you can argue that it's only psycological and means litte/nothing, but those people won't buy it unless it's on steam and then through steam regardless.

Also the benefits of having your game on steam in the amount of extra attention that attracts, compared to the fairly reasonable (or so I've been lead to believe) cut that steam takes from your profits, are massive.

So yes, the devs will make more money from your single purchase if you buy it directly, however if you buy it through steam, and play it, and love it, and your friends see you playing it and hear about you loving it, and some of them buy it to see what you're on about, and then some of their friends buy it... well you get the picture. I know most of my mates would be fairly open to any suggestions for cool games I've bought from steam, but would almost certainly not buy a game I'd found, from their eyes, fairly randomly and obscurly tucked away on some dev who they've never heard of's webpage.

It's running pretty good here (Intel core2duo E6850 3 GHz, 8GB RAM, GeForce 8800GT 512MB) and I've already had some fun with editing scripts. The absence of anti-aliasing kinda made my eyes bleed though D:

I don't think it looks "really good" without AA.. I don't know the resolution you're using, I'm using 1920*1080 and I thought it was pretty annoying and distracting :/ If they don't add AA in the full game I'll obviously just have to live with it though. The rest of the graphics/game looks and sounds great.

Not optimized for ATI, and some poor collision detection to boot.
You guys gotta get your priorities straight, but I'll let you pass because this is nice for an Alpha.

Basically, only try this is you're in the mindset to test and find bugs. Because there are bugs. And not much gameplay.

Also, you may want to read up on the current common bugs, like the fact that fullscreen doesn't seem to work for most people.

That being said, it's pretty awesome and people are already modding in features: Unknownworlds.com
