Over the past 8 years of ModDB's history we have grown quite rapidly in both the size of our database (we are the largest) and the overall count of total members, with this in mind we have decided to implement our new gold membership program. This has been coming for quite sometime now, but we are thrilled that it will both help developers and remove advertising from our site, and that is a very good thing.
So what exactly does this Gold Membership have and why should you even consider upgrading? It's quite simple, in-exchange for a small annual fee you will have access to a whole range of new tools and functions like:
- High speed download servers
- Unique member title
- Custom member/game/mod profiles
- Advert free website/videos
We have also made some changes to the current member system to essentially lure our existing member list over by removing functionality from the ModDB you currently know, so now only Gold Members will be able to do the following:
- Create Profiles
- Post news/articles/tutorials/reviews
- Upload Content
- Upload custom avatars
- Participate in the comments
- Send Personal Messages (guests can only select from a preset selection of messages to send to each other like "Hi" and "So I have this great idea for a Mod but I don't have any skills relating to game development, would you like to make it for me?")
- Download mods/addons/games
Starting April 8th this new system will be implemented and ModDB will change for the better. If you are worried about what will happen to your existing profiles do not fear, until you upgrade your account you simply will not be able post anything new on the profiles you have permissions over.

Believe it or not, if this was true, it would help eliminate those mods that say released, but die within two weeks or have no servers.

Thing is I'd consider a ModDB Gold/Pro/whatever you call it membership if the price was reasonable and the benefits were worthwhile. What you get for free here with very minimal ads is impressive.
