An update on the Star Wars total conversion mod for Freelancer!

Posted by on

Over the past week, the FW:ToW Dev team has really picked up steam in all areas of development. In particular, graphic effects and gameplay. In respect to the "pretty things", our resident graphics genius, FriendlyFire, has decided to redo all the explosion effects and death fuses for the ships. What he has accomplished has been simply amazing and really shows the power of our "out dated" Freelancer Engine. He posted a video up on our new live steaming site, which I'll discuss more about below, here:

We've also been finishing the last touches on our shiplist with Overfiend working overtime to create this new A-9 interceptor model!

With the power of our new live streaming site, we can actually show you the mod in game, LIVE! So, if you have any questions and want to see the mod ingame please come visit: Livestream.com @ 14h00 EDT on July 25th.

Nice explosion, but the smoke seems a bit out of place, imo

Really nice effects!
But the death sequence is much too fast.
Such a big ship blown up into tiny dust, in a few seconds?
That's too fast ;)
If you kill a capital ship, you want to see a devastating destruction over several seconds! 10 seconds would be nice, but more seconds wouldn't annoy ;)
Also it is sad, that there is nothing left of the ISD. Only dust.
But I think, because you've shown a video of the wracks of smaller ships, there will be ruins left of capitals, it's just not finished yet. I hope so^^
Capital-kills are just too beautiful and memorable, to let them be nothing more than a big explosion of dust.

Explosions are exponentially harder to make the longer they last, and players keep control of their ships during the entire thing, so a too long sequence would seem odd for the player.

Further, it'd be fairly taxing for lower end GPUs and the current effect does not use wrecks which *hopefully* will be done in time.

It almost looks like a comic explosion, too. And as Lenny said, it'd be nice to see some debris or even larger parts of the ship. But nice anyway.

Maybe a clone of how the SD dies in empire at war would be good?

would look a little better if the "final" explosion was bigger and covered the entire ship. Really liked the cascading effect btw!

Sorry i lol'd when the explosion came, but the animation before that was really nice (reason why i loled in the end, wasn't expecting such a small explosion)

The perfect explosion would be like in Homeworld 2 capital ships, idk if you ever played it, if you did you should know exactly what i mean, and the sound can be the same one used on the capital ships on Freelancer

As others have pointed out - debris would be cool too. I'd remove the smoke clouds (that stay) near the end though. Other than that... great!
