The focus of the first release was visuals and weapon realism. There are several enhancements to visuals, most notably full quality models at extreme distances and bombs visibly attached to aircraft. Most weapons (not all due to lack of research information) have been given the correct amount of ammo, muzzle velocity, rate of fire, reload time, and range of motion. For patrol boats, mines sink to hide just below the surface of the water and torpedoes are actually launched from the torpedo tubes instead of under them. There are also improvements to vehicles such as giving the jeep true 4 wheel drive or fully operational flaps on aircraft. Vehicle wrecks and dead soldiers remain on the battlefield much longer, only being limited for the sake of system performance and to prevent unrealistic clutter.

Here are some of the major updates included in release 2:

  • Iron sights for hand weapons
  • No crosshairs
  • Objects from official maps (Battle of Britain, Coral Sea, and Liberation of Caen) are accessed from the mod files rather than the maps and their vehicles have been given the same treatment as the other vehicles
  • Submarines can go deeper, have an AA gun, and more torpedo tubes have been added (there are now tubes behind the subs!)
  • No 'window fog', meaning it's possible to see inside buildings from a distance
  • Willy and Kubelwagen have working back seats and passengers can move their bodies (head bobbers, unite!)
  • Sea vehicles have moving rudders and propellers
  • Aircraft flaps fixed in multiplayer
  • Shells for aircraft and AA guns
  • Better cannon effects for ships and DefGun
  • Better ship smoke
  • Bullet marks last much longer
  • Longer refill/reload time for aircraft bombs
  • Map titles are actual battle names
  • Land and air vehicles don't self-destruct when critical damage
  • Music and background video

It is recommended that you visit the WWII Reality wiki page for complete details.
That same wiki is also being used for information that can help BF1942 modders, such as object details and game properties. BF1942 modders are encouraged to contribute.

Here's an update for everyone on the progress of WWII Reality.

I haven't continued work on the mod apart from keeping notes since I got a job in late February, but this month (July) I'm on hiatus and have some time. I only have enough time for a small patch which can be expected before I get back to my job in early August if things go smoothly. The primary reason for this patch is to fix problems some people have reported with the iron sights, this patch will definitely not be released until I get that fixed. I'll need to figure out how I'll continue the mod while working my job without getting tired of working on stuff all the time, but that's another story for another time.

The patch will be called Release 2 Patch 1, or r2p1 for short as displayed in the game menu. It will mainly fix some reported bugs, but if I get the bugs fixed and still have time I may include some other things from my massive to-do list. There is no guarantee that all the planned fixes will be completed, sometimes a bug is tougher to fix than expected as I've encountered on several occasions. I'm hoping to make the patch cross-compatible with the core release, that is to say a patched client can play on an unpatched server and vice versa. All patches will be full patches; for example, you won't need patch 1 installed to install patch 2.

Here are the top objectives of the patch:

  1. Fix a few problems some people have with iron sights lagging or not aligning [lag supposedly fixed, aligning bug not fixed]
  2. Remove crosshairs for Pak40 and Ju88A [done!]
  3. Replace old logo with new logo [done!]

Update 2009-08-18: Alright, I've started my job so I didn't meet my hoped goal, but I've gotta finish what I started before it gets too stale. What I need is people with any iron sight problems to help test. One person contacted me a couple months ago about the lag problem and helped find a solution, but I haven't seen him since and I want to make sure it's fixed before releasing the patch. Another who has the alignment problem comes around occasionally but rarely at times convenient for both of us to work on it.
Please contact me if you're experiencing the bugs and want to help out, or even if you don't have problems and want to help, I could use all the assistance and encouragement I can get. My contact information can be found in the WWII Reality documentation.

great mod! it is very fun and feels way more realistic than vanilla bf1942.

i do have some suggestions though.
-make bodies and wreckage disappear quicker, like 4-8 minutes so they dont build up to crazy numbers and cause lag.
-let planes land on water if they are going slow, and die if they go too fast (if possible)

another idea, is to increase the bomb damage and splash from the bomb. in wwii, divebombers could make a tiger tank cartwheel through the air by placing a bomb right infront of it. in the game, you need to hit it head on to do any kind of damage

I'm not sure why you have this problem, but have you tried both the installer and the zip? More details might help.

One question about maps:
This is a realism mod, how you will change, edit and/or create the original bf maps to make them more realistic???

1-Use the same map with same weapons, tank, planes... in the map but making realistic changes like changing the map name (I thing that you already made) and some other realistic changes.

2- Make a more realistic map of the ww2 battle that the original bf map was using.

3-Think about what part of the ww2 battle the original bf map represent and make a realistic map based on that part of the ww2 battle.

The 3rd would be the most realistic choice.

In the long run I plan to change the maps to include the same weapons and vehicles that existed in the actual battle. If I had a high level of realistic and creative mapping skill, I'd go for a full redesign of the maps, but I don't so I need to settle for either tweaking the existing maps or having someone else take the job of redesigning them.

Unfortunately for the mod, most of my time has gone to a job and I don't expect to have enough free time to deal with the maps let alone a majority of my plans for the mod. Development is in an indefinite freeze while I try to organize my time in the best way possible. If anyone wants to help out and join the team, it would be greatly appreciated and it might get WWII Reality back on its feet in development.

If you're talking about the weapon motion lag when switching to iron sights, I'm aware of it. It appears to be caused by the client checking (slowly) with the server where the weapon should be positioned. I haven't noticed the lag during local testing, which reassures me that it is likely the case. I need to confirm it and I'll probably just remove the check since it's not really important anyway. If that's not what you're talking about, please let me know.

I use the Mod Development Toolkit plugin in Gmax for modeling. The homepage for the MDT is at Mdt.planetbattlefield.gamespy.com and the homepage for Gmax is at Turbosquid.com
I'd be happy to take some help. If you're up for it, contact me directly (info is on the wiki or included with the mod) and we can work from there. I understand if you're just beginning and you might not be able to make quality models for WWII Reality, but I'd be willing to work with you in getting there. I don't know much about modeling myself, so it would be more like joint learning than anything.
