From the depths a light shall rise, a star of hope for all the World. As a darkness gathers, it shall stand mighty as the blade, and be the shield that shelters as well as the spear that drives to the heart of evil. Yet, as this light will shine, darkness will slither like a tendril of hate, like a fatal disease, and the star will be its slave. Alas, this is the fate of all things, yet most beautiful cruelty is in the fall of Numenor. This mod will bring you back to the Second Age, before the War of the Ring, when the Dark Lord Sauron sought to corrupt and destroy the hearts of Men which lay bound to the fate of Westernesse and both scatter the loyal Dunedain as well as bending to his will those with weaker hearts or demeanour. With an all-new campaign, two new factions, a specialised purpose-built Living Map for use in the War of the Ring mode, plus new maps to battle over, this truly expansive mod will reinvigorate your Battle for Middle-earth experience like never before!

Report RSS The Truth

Westernesse has come to the point of no return, and I think it's time has come.

Posted by on

It's been years in the making, and God knows it doesn't feel like nine years since I started modding. I started Westernesse in late 2012 with some crazy intention of having a release mid 2013, and of course that didn't happen, but it seems that every time I did something, I'd have to fix the bugs surrounding it, and just manage to get it in game. But even now, nearly into September 2015, it feels like nothing has happened, and in a way that's true. The truth is that Westernesse is an awful mess, with none of the new assets in game not working due to unexplainable errors that nobody knows how to fix, and for the last half a year I've been struggling by with the semi-functional tools I've got. I think it's time to call it quits now, since I'm off to university to study this type of thing full-time, and while I've lost no interest in finishing Westernesse, I've come to the realization that it's just too far gone now, and that I will never be able to complete it.

I'm grateful for all the support you have all given me, and I'm sorry for those who awaited a release, but I think the time has come to say farewell.

Namárië.

rest in peace Westernesse,
may the ideas of this mod inspire other people to make new mods and let the spirit of the game continue so that it won't die out.
Again rest in peace...

I do hope that what I've done be of benefit to the modding community, even without a proper release.

Failure is a mark of a true genius, because with every failure teaches humility, and humility will take you up. I wish you the best luck in your studies!

Welp, another overly ambitious mod project bites the dust, this is why I always try to tell people "start small and then expand, don't bite off more than one can chew" and yet nobody ever listens. Sigh, so stupid being right all the time when it's at the expense of other peoples failures. And this was looking to actually get somewhere from random way too high poly meshes without textures to maps that look finished. And actually look good too

Are you planning to release atleast the new maps with the new props you've developed? That'll ensure atleast some of your time spent will be enjoyed by other people.

Actually, this project is entirely feasible, with the right tools and the knowledge of coding which I don't have. It is not a matter of scale, since ironically the failure of Westernesse is partially down to ambition - I'm moving on to bigger things. This is not an example of biting off more than I could chew, but I suppose more of an example of experimental study.

It must be a hard life being right all the time, and of course, you know best that people don't actually have measured and entirely justified reasons for making their choices.

For the tools we have tpb and knowlage is aquirable by tutorials, .ini coding isn't nearly as ****** and hard to learn as some other games such as skyrim. As someone who's developed and released 2 one-man total conversion mods for Empire at war for more than 5 years, starting with 0 knowlage of any skill involved with modding, I'd say it's down to people's willingness to learn on how far one can go. Over the years I learned how to do practically everything except scripting for my game (screw programming), from making maps and coding to modelling/texturing/rigging. Everytime I hit a bump like the one you're at now I decided to give trying to master the problem a shot. Moddeling, rigging and animating being the most difficult and time consuming ones for sure (but also the most fun imo). You can get snary at me all you like for what I said in my previous comment, but I've adviced too many EAW mods on how not to start way too ambitious, then see them utterly ignore it and fall flat on their faces 6 monthes down the road to not get cynical about such mods when I see them popping up, and occasionally commenting on them. I'm not some random jack-***/smart-*** but a cynical-though-experience modder who's sad another project died that looked as if it was heading in the right direction. And this isn't a "Hurr durr u no try hard enough durrrr" comment, though as someone who regularly get irritated by people writting comments on my own mods for little to no reason, I do understand that that isn't always the easiest distinction to make. Do you plan to release the maps? I'd like to play them, though I'm not sure if it's possible with all the new art assets required.

The errors I have encountered are, unfortunately, not things which I can overcome, nor work around, try as I might. And believe me, I have tried, in addition to asking all the longtime highly-regarded modders if they could help, to again, no avail. I well know the nearly inevitable doom of starting large-scale mods from the outset. I do intend to release the maps set in Middle-earth (as they aren't as dependent on Westernesse assets), and though I recognize your points, as they are fairly made, that does not change my decision to halt progress. I have learned more through defeat than I ever expected, as I suppose is the norm in modding, however, there comes a point where things are just too far gone to salvage.

Ah well, at least you're not so demoralized that you're willing to continue in this area. And who knows? Maybe with the new knowledge you obtain from university you'll go on to make Westernesse 2.0, better than ever before.
Have fun at university

Sometimes you just gotta wipe the board clean, move onto a new project, and hope for the best. No hard feelings, good luck with your career! ^.^
