War of the Silmarils is a sub-mod of Third Age: Total War, the ever popular total conversion for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms. The goal is to follow the lore as closely as possible and faithfully reproduce the heroic First Age of Tolkien's Middle-earth in the Medieval II: Total War engine. War of the Silmarils features many new unique factions, each complete with a roster of units, a completely new campaign map of Beleriand and the lands to the North, and much more. So if you're one of the many who have been enthralled by Tolkien's mystical world, this is a mod to watch!

From the stronghold of Barad Eithel to the fastness of Himring, ever the Noldor keep a wary eye upon the planes of Ard-galen and the lands Northwards. Upon the planes of Ard-galen, the Noldor kept their contingents of cavalry as the grass there is lush and from afar one can descry the foe and move to beset them. The Knights of Hithlum, knights of Fingolfin's folk are amongst the most renowned knights of the Noldor, battle hardened by constant trial of arms. They endure bodily harm more readily than even the most grizzled of Elves, many of them recalling the treachery of Feanor and the passage through the Grinding Ice were many a valiant Elf Lord lost his life. Therefore hot burns their hate against the foe that is the cause of all evil for were it not for him their people would never have left the Blessed Realm. Under the Banner of Fingolfin they ride, the Star on a blue banner being borne far through the war-torn Northern lands upon their great steeds, the sheen of their blades muted by orc-gore. The rumor of their approach is like the rolling of thunder and their attacks swift and destructive as strikes of lightning.

Although few steeds indeed survived the passage of Helcaraxe, those that did flourished in the green meadows of Hithlum and upon the lush plains of Ard-galen. The mounts of the Knights of Hithlum are of the breed of Valinor, of great stature and speed allowing their riders to easily hew down upon orcish helms, cleaving their skulls in twain. The gleam of their tall helms and great silver shields is blinding like sun rays reflecting upon ice. Blue are their fluttering capes, blue also the gems that adorn their shields, their gems wrought by the most skilled of Elven smiths. Many an Orc-cheiftain has been layed low by their long blades, wicked and graceful.
