The Great War mod is a total conversion modification for Napoleon: Total War. It creates an authentic representation of World War 1-era tactics, strategies and general warfare within the game. Including stunning new visuals that include entirely new models and textures for equipment, vehicles and more, the mod immerses you into the era with brand new gameplay unlike anything you've experienced in Total War before.

This post is to give more information about the upcoming new ship models.

For a very long time it has been impossible to add new ship models, modify the rigging and location of sailors, however after the release of TGW 6.0 we were contacted by a modder named ChaosRobie who showed us that it was now possible to change all of those things.

Here is a video of what ChaosRobie was able to do with modding ships in NTW.

Now that we know all of this is possible we are planning on adding all new ship models to TGW mod. This will not be any easy or fast process. Just to give an idea of how long it would take to make a single ship model and add it to the mod;

1. First we need to decide which specific ship we want to create based on the ships of that period.

2. Next we have to find usable blueprints and reference photos for each ship to aid in modeling the ship as accurately as possible.

3. Next is creating the model itself, which can be very time consuming, as well as UV mapping the model so the texture displays correctly.

4. Then we need to create textures for the models, this includes the color (diffuse) texture, the gloss/specular texture and the normal map. This can sometimes take as long as creating the model itself.

5. Finally we have to implement the new ship model in the game. Given that each ship will be very different this will also take lots of time.

Most importantly, adding a single new ship, one at a time, would look extremely out of place since since all the other ships would still look and function the way they do currently in the mod. This means we will not release the new ships until ALL of them are done. Considering that there are 9 ship types this means it will be quite a while before we have this fully implemented.

Here is a list of ship classes and planned ships to model, the goal is to have at least 1 ship model from each of the major powers that fought in the war.

2. Dreadnought

3. Battlecruiser

6. Light Cruiser

If you would like to help to speed up this process please post any proposed ships you would like to see added but make sure you have good readable blueprints and references photos or else we wont be able to use them.

Hey man, I was just wondering if it might be possible to import the ship models from shogun 2 into the great war mod when I found your post. Do you think it might be possible to use those as a starting point for the ships you wish to make? I mean, if we are willing to still sacrifice historical accuracy like we are doing with the current ships we could at least do the same with some better looking ships from shogun without altering much but the sailors themselves.

I'm sure it is possible but it's beyond my modding abilities atm.
