Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre is a Realism based mod that recreates the intense Pacific battles of WW2 fought between the Empire of Japan and the United States of America. SS:PT will utilize the incredible graphical and physical capabilities of Crytek's eagerly awaited "Crysis", using technologies such as Depth Of Field, Motion Blur, and First Person Actor to take realism and immersiveness to a whole new level.

The core aim of the mod is to provide a gritty, intense, and highly immersive experience for the player; we plan to do this by making every aspect of the mod as realistic as possible without ditching the fun aspect. We want to put the player in the combat boots of a United States or Japanese soldier fighting for his country (and his own life!) in the Pacific Theatre of World War 2. There will be a large emphasis on squadplay in this mod as well; we won't force you to stick with a squad but we plan to make enough advantages for doing so that the player will prefer squadplay over lonewolf combat. We plan to make this a thinking man's first person shooter so Rambo methods will usually just get you killed, and fast (unless you're just really really good).

SS:PT will feature many of the Pacific's most famous and action packed battles in addition to the critical smaller battles that occured in relative secrecy. SS:PT will include different weather conditions including nighttime, thunderstorms, and sunny days in addition to other environmental effects such as fire and smoke to make your experience as a soldier as thrilling and authentic as possible. All vehicles, weapons and locations will be highly detailed and historially accurate to when they actually occured. Currently the SS:PT team have most of the gameplay aspects of the game pre-planned and content creation has begun, and are waiting for the SDK and Crysis to be released before they can start full production!

With Crysis set for an early 2007 release, mod teams are already developing some exciting modifications for the game ? many of which will be released on, or shortly after the games official release. While Crytek will be releasing tools to the general public (after the release of Crysis) to make the development of modifications relatively straight-forward, modifications are being developed now that have the backing of Crytek for development support and access to a pre-software development kit.

In this multi part series, inCrysis looks at the finer details of some of the modifications in development and talks to the people behind them. The first mod we look at is Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre.

Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre is a WWII modification set amongst the small islands of the Pacific Ocean. Project lead Kevin Nayer (Kevinnayer@gmail.com) wanted an engine that would reflect his abilities, so there was no question that the new Cry Engine would cater. ?I had CryEngine 2 in mind because of it's many innovative features, I thought gliding through the volumetric clouds would be exciting?.

The team behind Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre are aiming to provide a gritty, intense, and highly immersive experience for the player ? ?We plan to do this by making every aspect of the mod as realistic as possible without ditching the fun aspect of the mod?. There will be a large emphasis on squadplay in this mod as well. ?We won't force you to stick with a squad but we plan to make enough advantages for doing so that the player will prefer squadplay to lone-wolf combat. We plan to make this a thinking man's first person shooter so Rambo methods will usually just get you killed, and fast?.

Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre will offer players tense team based jungle fighting while being attacked from above. Some of the highlights planned include exhilarating fighter plane dogfights, parachuting out of carriers, an innovative health system. ?We are also going on the extreme route of providing no HUD for the player, which is a challenge for us, the creators, to make it both more immersive yet still practical?.

Kevin also tells us that while various gameplay modes may be supported in future releases, the first release will focus on the 3-stage round system. Stepping Stones: Pacific Theatre is expected to be released anytime from the middle of 2007 to early 2008.

Please have Iwo Jima on this mod, that would be so fun. No one has ever made a Iwo Jima level yet in a Pacific mod so you guys should! Have the beach landing, Mt. Sarabachi to the left, have artillery pieces up there shooting at the tanks and marines running up the beach. Good luck on this mod, please do not give up on it! If you need any info on weapons I can try to help you, I have many firearms.

Yep, realism is our main focus, No crosshairs etc.
We have a couple of weapon fanatics ready to pull apart every aspect of that, until its realistic. :)

So huge maps, multiplayer, paratroopers, islands sounds very nice.

I assume realism means no-crosshairs, ironsights, etc?
If so, that would be even better! :D
