Champion - A Defender of the Republic image - Star Wars: Interregnum mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that builds off of the highly successful Enhanced 4X Mod. Fleeing the unknown terror that is chasing the Vasari, the factions of Sins of a Solar Empire stumble on a temporary wormhole that takes them to a galaxy far, far away. The sudden arrival of armadas with trillions of refugees and thousands of warships between the events of Episodes 5 & 6 forever alters the Star Wars universe and plunges the galaxy into an unprecedented period of chaos and violence. Begun, a new conflict has.
One of the last cruiser sized vessels produced by the New Class program, the Champion class Heavy Cruiser was a well armed and very well armored warship that served as a prototype for the technologies used on the famous Nebula class Star Destroyer. Armed with heavy turbolasers, ion cannons, and missiles, the real strength of the Champion was its powerful shields and armor that let it tank damage that could cripple larger Star Cruisers and Destroyers. Excellent ships to fortify any fleet with, their presence was always a welcome sight to any other New Republic captains in a task force.
The Champion is the New Republic heavy cruiser. It is based on the original design of the Nebula class Star Destroyer, before it was retconned. However, this ship design continued to appear in later Star Wars comic books, implying it was still canon, just without a name.
Some mods call this ship the Defender, as it was the previous name of the Nebula. However, there is another New Class ship, the Defender class Carrier, with this name, and I did not want to create confusion. Champion is a name made up for this mod, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

So, will we be getting the later New Republic ships like the Nebula, Endurance, the Viscount and (fingers crossed) maybe even the Lusankya? Those were always some of my favourites, and I felt like they really gave the impression that, "yeah, at this point we're an actual legitimate galactic government now". End-game stuff, like?
Pretty sure the Nebula and Endurance will be in the mod, and I believe the Viscount has already been confirmed. I doubt the Lusankya will be. It was a captured SSD, not a ship produced by the New Republic, so I doubt it would be one of their titans, and a SSD would be too powerful to be a hero. Besides, the NR would already have the Viscount, which can easily match a SSD.
The Lusankya is already in the mod, but as the flagship of Director Ysanne Isard of the Warlords faction. The New Republic captured it from her, but that has not happened in this mod's timeline. So the New Republic cannot build SSDs.
That said, part of the reason we gave the planet Kuat the ability to let any faction build SSDs is for New Republic role players who want one in their fleet. :-)

It seemed the least bad solution for us. As this ship technically doesn't have an official name anymore anyways.
It's a nice name since if it's a similar title to that of Defender or of Guardian/Sentinel so the ship retains it's sentiment behind the name xP

Presumably Republic Engineering Corporation, same as many of the other New Class ships, including the Nebula Star Destroyer.
However, once again this ship was in a very strange place canon wise before Legends ended. The design is canon thanks to comic books, but it was the old look of the Nebula/Defender originally. It was not really fully explained what the old design is or what its stats are.
Definitely puts it in an odd place, the engine block is a bit reminiscent of rendili designs, could see it being a modernized ship by them. Looking forward to playing with it. Thanks for all the teasers recently!
