What's always bothered me about the E-wing is that it doesn't really look like an E.

The B-wing has an excuse... what about the E-wing?

Also I remember reading somewhere that capital ships don't use antimatter to make strikecraft. How will that affect balancing for the E-wing?

In this mod, advanced fighters (TIE Interceptor, TIE Defender, A-wing, and now E-wing) do use antimatter. That is how they are balanced. You can get standard fighters without antimatter, or pay antimatter for somewhat better ones.

E-wing sort of looks like an E when looking directly above it.

Any plans to give vanilla factions some advanced strikecraft?!

Possible, but that would be an E4X change, not something for this mod.

I've always thought the E-wings were a good looking fighter. It has that grittiness of the X-wing yet it feels like it should, more modern

Since the E-Wing is an advanced strike fighter what is the regular fighter? is it gonna be the XJ-series X Wing?

It will just be the X-wing, same as the Rebels get. I don't think we really need to get into the advance model numbers, and Sins doesn't have a great way to upgrade a particular fighter mid game. But you can probably assume late New Republic would have the XJ lore wise.

Can't you do it the same way STA3 upgrades their Excelsiors to Excelsior refits through an ability/research? or maybe say a specific ship like the Endurance class carries them thus they unlock when the Endurance is but only the Endurance carries them?

I mean you could make them another advanced fighter but a ship specific one. Since the New Republic/Rebels do love their variety of starfighter based tactics. Wouldn't it make sense to give the New Republic more variety of fighter craft even if some have to be ship specific?

Frigates and capitalships are one thing (Isard's Acclamators already do that), but fighters are much more limited in how you can mod them. Most infamously, you can't even mod proper shields on them.

We could give the late game units better Xwings, but honestly the Rebels will have better Starfighter squadrons overall due to better support/starfighter doctrine research. The New Republic will have more variety due to the E/K Wings, and I don't think we need to add Xwing variants to enhance that even further. As it is, the New Republic will have so many other strengths.

I see. Are there any ideas on what the New Republic's gunship would be? or are they having the X4 like the Rebels?

Initially I wanted it to be the K-wing actually, but it seems they are actually the one Alliance fighter without them. :-/

So for now it will probably be the X4 for both.

Well if you use the K-wing as a gunship perhaps you could use the Cutlass-9 as a replacement bomber craft? It has 2 medium laser turrets and proton torpedo/concussion missile launcher.

It was used by the Rebels and New Republic.

Always loved the E-Wing. Looking forward to watch a couple squadrons take on some Imperial capital ships :)

So... from my understanding, A-wings and Interceptors are merely improved fighters, while Defenders and possible E-wings are all-purpose?!

More or less yes. They have more than one weapon type.

I always thought that the xwing should have gotten light PT attacks but this probably works better balance wise.

Lore wise yes, they should have them too, but it would be hard to balance that with Vanilla fighters that don't have secondary weapons.

Well lore wise A-wings should have concussion missiles and b-wings should have Ion canons and chin-mounted light lasers and concussion missiles ETC. lore wasn't my point lol

Description

The New Republic's ambition to build a new, modern navy did not just include large warships. Even Starfighters, one of the greatest strengths of the Rebellion, were intended to be replaced with entirely new, improved designs. With the E-wing the New Republic technically succeeded, but it also revealed deep issues with trying to advance so quickly with an inexperienced bureaucracy.

The E-wing was designed to be an all round improvement to the X-wing, serving as a balanced all round spacecraft. Its more modern weaponry (including substantially larger torpedo capacity), improved speed, and armor did give the E-wing several advantages. However, issues with its electronic systems, including the R7 astromech droid it required, greatly delayed its widespread deployment and production, and resulted in significant cost overruns. By the time it was ready for general use, upgraded versions of the X-wing had closed some of the gab with the E-wing, and it was decided only equip elite squadrons with the new craft. Some, most notably Rogue Squadron, even refused, preferring to use the classic X-wing until the end.

In the mod, the E-wing is a potent fighter/bomber that is a bit more durable than the X-wing and armed with proton torpedoes to help it damage warships. However, it requires significant antimatter to field these squadrons, which can make it difficult to replace losses in the middle of battle.
