Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that builds off of the highly successful Enhanced 4X Mod. Fleeing the unknown terror that is chasing the Vasari, the factions of Sins of a Solar Empire stumble on a temporary wormhole that takes them to a galaxy far, far away. The sudden arrival of armadas with trillions of refugees and thousands of warships between the events of Episodes 5 & 6 forever alters the Star Wars universe and plunges the galaxy into an unprecedented period of chaos and violence. Begun, a new conflict has.

Hello Everyone,

As we begin to work on some of the less represented factions of Star Wars, such as the New Republic and Mandalorians, our traditional method of using voice overs from other Star Wars media is beginning to be inadequate. Not only have we largely exhausted our favorite sources of voice work, but many of the units we want to add going forward have in fact never appeared in a Star Wars video game or movie to date. Therefore we'd like to expand our use of custom made dialog from you, fans of the mod! :-D If you don't think you have a very good voice but are skilled in sound design and/or editting, rest assured we can use your help too!

Who Can Submit Voiceovers?

Anyone is free to submit custom voiceovers. However, we do want to preserve a good level of quality with voices so there is not a very noticeable difference when hearing official and fan submitted voice work. As such, a few guidelines to keep in mind if you are thinking about submitting voice work.

  1. First, a decent microphone is basically a requirement. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to record your voice at a decent volume without a lot of background noise. If we cannot get you sounding clear, it is unlikely we will add your work to the mod. See recording guidelines for more information.
  2. Your voice should be easily understandable to a general English speaking audience. The stereotype in Star Wars is that American accents are mainly used for the Rebels and British like accents for the Empire, but these are not hard rules and with the New Republic and Mandalorians there is more scope for variety, as both of these factions are known for recruiting throughout the Galaxy. On the other hand, if your accent is so heavy everyone's first thought is "That guy is from [Insert Country Here]!", that is not ideal since it might interrupt the immersion of the player.
  3. Voice work from all genders are welcome!

How should I record?

  1. Go to a quiet room. I can somewhat deal with background noise, but if your microphone is picking up background talking or louder noises in your house, that might ruin the line.
  2. Leave a few seconds at the beginning of the recording without saying anything. If there is any noise in the recording, I can use this sample to try and remove any noise in the actual line.
  3. If possible, save your recordings as .wav files. They are big but since we will likely do some sound work on your dialog, having the highest quality versions helps. High Quality .Ogg is also good, since that is the ultimate destination format for Sins. Please avoid MP3 files if possible.
  4. Try to record as loud as possible while maintaining clarity. This might make the noise worse but I can deal with that more easily than trying to amplify a recording that is a lot quieter than the other audio in the mod.

If you're unsure how to actually save a recording of your voice, I personally use the Open Source program Audacity.

What do I need to record?

Each unit in Sins has about 12-15 lines of dialog for five different actions. These are:

  • On Select: 3-4 Lines (What are your orders?)
  • On Move/General Order Given: 3-4 Lines (Yes sir.)
  • On Attack Order Given: 3-4 Lines (Open Fire!)
  • When Built: 1 Line (Unit ready for orders.)
  • On Jump: 1 Line (Prepare the Jump to Lightspeed)

Depending on the unit you are recording for, some of these may not be relevant (Unarmred ships don't need attack lines etc).

For some units we may have more unique dialog in mind, but we also encourage you to experiment with lines that fit these categories for a given unit. After all, there's a lot of fairly generic dialog already, so if you can give your own take on a unit, that is probably a good thing.

What Units Need Dialog?

Now here is where the fun begins.

1. Empire

  • Star Dreadnaught (can be generic, or for the Bellator or Executor specifically).
  • Allegiance Battlecruiser
  • Lancer Frigate
  • Escort Carrier
  • Assault Gunboat
  • Captain Pellaeon

2. Alliance

  • Ambassador Ship
  • Providence Destroyer
  • Dauntless Heavy Cruiser
  • Captain Kre'fey (Bothan Hero)
  • Bulk Cruiser

3. New Republic

Instead of listing specific units since they are not finalized, please just submit some generic lines and we'll try to match you with a good ship. :-) In addition to a range of human captains, we may also accept some Star Wars alien impressions as well. Mon Calamari and Bothans would be particularly useful as they have specific units for them, but anything is fair game.

4. Mandalorians

Somewhat similar to the New Republic, this faction is still under construction, so general voice overs may be best here. But if you want a few examples.

  • Firespray Patrol Craft
  • Protector Gunship
  • Venator Star Destroyer
  • Scyk Fighter
  • Kimogila Bomber

So in summary, pick out some units to audition for, record a few lines, send them to interregnumtalent@gmail.com, and hopefully we'll contact you back and work with you for getting them in the mod. :-) A lot of the voice actor coordination will be done by Brutal Theory, so he'll likely be the one to get back with you.

Thank you for being interested in doing voice work for this mod!

Absolutely. Please private message me some samples. You can either pick from some of the units listed above, or just do something generic for a particular faction(s).

Funny to read this here. I was planning on redoing the Corellian Scout voice lines with my own because they're just awful (no offense). I'll send you the files when I finish it.

I don't think they're that bad, but feel free. We have lots of other units that could use work though that don't have any lines atm.

Hey BrutalTheory, do you have any specific lines you need. I'm pretty good at voice work but I tend to do best when I have specifc lines and info to draw inspiration from. Hope I can help, this is a fantastic mod.

If you're interested in doing voiceovers, use the gmail (so whatever team member is working on them at the moment can get back to you). interregnumtalent@gmail.com

For Moddb private messages, go to the user page of the person you want to PM, and on the right there should be an option to PM them.

All the people who've replied to the email have gotten responses. I will monitor it as well in case things get stuck, but Brutal Theory seems to be on top of things so far.

This is late, but all emails are generally responded to within 48 hours for any wondering.

Sorry to ask another question like this, but since it's been a while, do you guys still need voiceover volunteers?

I know this thread's like half a year old, but do you still need voice work?

We still need voices, though we have been a bit slow with organizing some of the submissions. :-)
