It is Kusari which is the Japanese mail armour. It is normally worn beneath full samurai armour.

During the Edo period full sets of armour fell out of use, and it was more common for soldiers on both sides to wear little or no armour at all.

Their mail was a bit different to these europeans shirts tho, no? Don't get me wrong, this is a perfectly fine representation of what they would have had.

Didn't the Ashigaru mostly fight in mail anyways? Atleast I always assumed that was the most common metal armor you'd find them fielding in large numbers.

No not at all, maille is quite uncommon as far as armour goes, it's incredibly hard to make and is quite heavy being essentially the equivalent of a hessian sack made of steel. Lamellar is the most common armour in any area except Europe by a good margin.

From the reproductions of European medieval mail shirts I've seen and wore it's not that heavy at all, and I'm not a big guy, I'm 167cm and quite slim, I wouldn't want to run around in it all day but the shirts breathe well and a belt really helps distribute the weight. Wouldn't say they are incredibly hard to make either, maybe time consuming but certainly doesen't require the same level of skill as plate armor, which was indeed very well available for the late medieval middle class, though it would have been munitions quality armor.

Japanese mail tended to be butted instead of riveted. While still strong against slashing attacks, it was much weaker against piercing ones

Description

Adding in more light amour alternatives. During the Edo period heavy samurai armour fell out of use and samurai and foot-soldiers alike adopted lighter uniform style armours.
