Early during the European invasion of GLA-controlled North Africa in 2037, ECA commanders in the field opted to maximise the protection of their forward operating bases. To this effect, soldiers frequently jury-rigged a simple metal superstructure on top of a Fortification to mount a remote weapon station, typically equipped with a medium machine gun. This was done particularly to enhance the defensive capability of Fortifications turned into medical or engineering outposts, to protect the vulnerable specialists and equipment inside, at the cost of sacrificing just one of the Fortification's usual three fireports. By the beginning of the Third World War, ECA field manuals actively encouraged this adaptation, which proved valuable in bolstering many frontline and rear echelon positions against incursion attempts by Russian Spetsnaz or reconnaissance detachments.
