Bolero is our haven at sea. She's our floating fortress among the ice, and I will see her interests defended.

The grass is done in custom modelled patches (Around 128 units square) and placed broadly in open areas, the large amount of overlapping props creates a very nice “blanket” effect. However, its drawbacks include being unsuitable for anything but the most gradual incline or flat surface; any places where there are multiple shades of lighting in a small area; and towards the edges of displacements. That last one is a real annoyance if you want to have water or a ledge.

It looks good but it only works for certain areas.

i also wondered how the grass could look so good in Hammer, thanks for explaning LordPheasant!
So when i understand it well the grass is some kind of a model that shows grass, very nice. Although i do understand all the problems that it can give, and that it only works on some parts. Still, for those parts it will be very handy to have.

How about putting up some vines on the walls? They seem a bit too clean.

Just imagine an antlion guard breaking the wall, a really hard time in small places to fight and run

Description

The screenshot to your left is the beginning of a level. I don’t usually show anything this early on, but I want to use this as a sort-of before and after comparison as well as showcasing some of the development process. I hope to focus a little more on the process of actually constructing the environments in a future article.
