For me, I just mess around with notes until I get something that sounds like a portal song.
Portal 1: Depressing high tech
Old Ap Test: 50s: Fun 70s:corrupt 80s: none mostly
Old Ap BTS: Cinematic and makes you feel small, but it uses synths alot.
New ap test: Uses synths to make noises that the test elements would make, they feel natural.
New ap bts: Not as many synths, feels high tech/electrical.
