This is a slightly experimental mod with an unusual story. It is not set inside the Half Life universe and there are some game mechanics which have been subtley altered. The pace starts out slow, and builds up gradually. This mod is intended to be more of an adventure rather than a shooter. If you approach this mod as a pure shooter, then you will probably not enjoy it. There are some intense action scenes, but most of these come later on, much of the earlier parts of the mod are focused on adventure and storytelling. There are numerous cutscenes. I know how some people don't like cutscenes, so the majority of them collect together loosely to make the "introduction". There are a couple of short ones scattered around later, but they never really jerk you away from where you are standing. At any rate - once you have a weapon, the amount of scenes drops off dramatically and the game leaves you in control much more...

Very interesting and sort of... random. That's the whole point, right? I enjoyed it.

There's just something about this mod. It's a little janky and crusty (I mean this affectionately, and it's to be expected from a 2009 mod), and so weirdly charming. It feels like a surreal painting or short story, which of course is only compounded by the slight uncanniess of Source stuff. Also, I could swear I've seen that early section with the cage guarded by guards with shotguns somewhere before, maybe a YouTube video on the HL2 beta or an iceberg video? That picture had been seared into my mind for whatever reason, so imagine my surprise stumbling upon this.

Anyway, it's a fun and nostalgic little experience.

The voice acting of Vortigaunt is really funny though.

A Random Quest is just as random the name is. You are a British-sounding man who gets kidnapped and teleported to another dimension which is full of Vortigaunts who have a quite sexually uncomfortable-sounding voice.

This mod offers some interesting narrative, most of which constantly spills from the main character and the NPCs. The protagonist talks, A LOT, which some can find annoying but I don’t. However, what I truly like about this mod is it brings back Half-Life’s freedom, you can kill everything in sight and does not get punished most of the time.

As for the gameplay, it kind of sucks. You don’t get access to armor and you are stuck with a shotgun most of the time. The combat arenas in this mod are the worst. The first one does not have any medkits and the ammo dispensers are frustratingly slow, and you have to fight Antlion Guards. The second is even worse, you have people shooting at you from every possible angle while you try to figure out where is the key to open the gate.

Due to the mod running on SDK 2006, it was quite uneasy to play with fixed FOV and it crashes whenever I alt-tab out of the mod.

This mod is OK, but due to frustrating combat, play at your discretion.

Definitely an interesting little mod. It has some cool ideas, and is certainly entertaining. It is a little on the short side, though, and the mapping feels a little out dated. But if you have an hour to kill, you can do a lot worse that Random Quest.

This mod is pretty good! the only thing that bothered me was that it was a bit too short. But I understand it takes a lot of hard work, but either way, great mod! keep up the good work! :D

Random Quest still holds up after five years as an... odd sort of game.

I feel my only complaint is that I still can't tell if this mod has an alternate ending or not. It's not that I'm complaining if it doesn't, it's just very unclear because of how many alternate choices you can make and being unable to tell if they have an impact on the end game.
