In 2011 I started browsing the latest graphical/sound quake mods, putting together a pretty build using LordHavoc's darkplaces, rygel's ultra textures packs, the reforged packs and a variety of mods, to play quake original. Anyone can do the same, however the hassle comes when you have to browse the quakeone forums, stumbling to find the posts which detail what cvars and what configs/files you have to overwrite etc in order to get each mod to work. I literally spent as much time getting the mods working as playing the game. So I put together a nice-looking build of quake original and it's expansions called epsilon for everybody to get into, without getting into the hassle of config files and searching to find every available mod then getting them to work! The main quake build also includes the original shareware first quarter of the quake game - it is easily upgraded to the full game by dropping in the pak0.pak and pak1.pak files from the full game's id1 directory (more details below).

The new version: faster, faster to download, faster loading, better looking, only one build instead of four (four graphics modes), hi poly models, loads of bugs fixed, tons of stuff optimized. See description for more.

Please note this version is not compatible with previous releases, previous release savegames or with previous releases of MP1/MP2/etc. I will be releasing those in time :)

Top level changes:
* Consolidated four builds into one, wrote batch/bash scripts for users to switch graphics quality levels (which swap graphics packages in and out and change game settings).
* Optimised rygel texture pack and qrp texture packs, fixed missing textures, improving performance (~10fps on my machine) and reducing download and loading times.
* Wrote bash scripts for running on Mac/Linux, retained executable permission status of darkplaces in package (thanks to LordHavoc and Andlinux).
* Added high poly packages for 'ultra' and 'high' graphics quality levels
* Consolidated build size is now about 2.2GB, about 2/3 the size of the original 'ultra' build and 1/4 the size of all of the previous builds put together.

Lower level changes:
* Changed TGA's to PNG's (when alpha's present) or jpeg in most packages to reduce size.
* Optimised performance settings and packages for each graphics level
* Separated normal textures out (not used in Low quality level) from other packages.
* Optimised SMC effects enabled for each quality level
* Optimised lighting settings for 'Low' quality level ('high' lighting).
* New sky for some levels (moondrunk/jenk/beafeater, me)
* Better teleport and slime textures for rygels pack (edited by me)
* Re-zipped pk3s using store. Faster loading, negligible size difference, better overall compression for downloadable zip (equates to 'solid' archiving for individual archives).
* Removed lightbeam support from reflecting overload. Until such point in time as computers quadruple their single core processing speed or darkplaces becomes multiprocessor-secure.
* A myriad of other fixes

Quake Epsilon is a graphically enhanced build of shareware Quake 1 for Windows/Linux/Mac, which can be upgraded to the full version of Quake along with it's mission packs Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity by copying the full-version .pak files into the correct folders.

It's made out of the Darkplaces engine and many mods from members of the Quake One forums and elsewhere as well as my own work. If it were not for these people, this build would not exist, so consider thanking the authors directly. These builds are legal and do not contain pirated content. Just simple unzip-and-play stuff.

You mean bump-mapping? You need to change to the Ultra graphics mode to enable bump-mapping/displacement-mapping.
Read the epsilon readme file in the main directory, it has full details on changing graphics modes.

Ultra does have parallax-mapping, so maybe something weird happened with your setup - not sure, sorry.

This is amazing!

I played it a few times on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8) with no problems in High Q mode, but I ran into a bit of a snag. Had to force quit after trying to start it and the "Loading" screen stayed for 10 mins with no change. On force quit it read:

the Necropolis
Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
progs/eyes.mdl: could not load texture "01 - Default"

[Process completed]

Any thoughts on this? I'm only a player so please forgive my ignorance on this. Any help is much appreciated. :)

It worthed each second of wait until the download finished (5 Hours, slow internet :P )
It works flawless and with a soberb quality, i couldn't manage to put together all of that in all my time "modding" Quake/Doom.

It works in 60fps per second almost all the time on ultra quality.
I cant do same with the Doom3 HighRes stuff :(

Thanks buddy, now im fragging everyone in high-res >:D

And im going to download the other mission packs!

Hi, the only way this mod will work is with the darkplaces engine, which I had nothing to do with developing personally. If you want something specific to work with the darkplaces engine, talk to it's author here:

They will be slow to load, because there are large textures. I have an SDD drive so I don't notice, however all attempts have been made to make the loading process as fast as possible (different file formats etc) but without sacrificing quality.
For low framerates, try a lower graphical setting such as high or medium.

There is no CRC error in the upload, there is an error in your download - please download again. Over 7000 users have downloaded and used this pack without issue. If you still have problems with the second download you might want to try checking out your internet service or using a download client.

Hey Metamorphosis. Hopefully you're still around to help me with my issue. First off, I love the mod :) For some reason, certain textures are absent, like the explosions from rockets. Also, the water seems a bit...odd? I really don't know how to describe it aside from that it almost looks non-existent and I can sometimes see through walls in it. I've tried many different resolutions and qualities (though I know my comuter can handle ultra). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not so much of a fan of the QRP textures, but many people are - the newer high poly models are pretty cool, I agree, but I don't have the time :)
There was someone else looking into it, but he's disappeared off the map.

I was having a problem unzipping the mod. I was being told by WinRAR that the archive was corrupt or multipart. Then I decided to try WinZip instead of WinRAR. Result!

If anyone else is getting a corrupt ZIP, try using WinZip OR the built in unzipping with Windows and not WinRAR.

Hi Metamorphosis, first of all congrats on your initiative, the final result is really really candy. I'm a former donnor to Rygel's work, I think he did a fantastic job, and Quake I is, imo, both a classic gem and a 'one of a kind' idea.
I agree with other posters that the music is spicy and add to the game. Very nice.
Now, I'd like to comment that 1920x1080 didn't appear on my video modes selection right away, though I could change vert & horz resolutions in config painlessly. Are you aware of anything related to this? Secondly, the effect you've published on the 'Stained glass lighting' picture, I was not able to see. I'm currently using 'ultra' option (via your batch). Tx m8.

metamorphosis Jan 30 2014, 1:56am replied:

Hey there - the stained glass lighting ie. lightrays was too computationally expensive, ie. running on CPU, and darkplaces is largely single-threaded, meaning that not even the fastest computers could run it properly. Pretty, but had to remove it.

Very glad to hear you like it, what part of rygel's stuff did you contribute to, out of interest? Thanks :)

ps. Regards resolutions, probably only a later version of darkplaces would fix it - and then you'd have to update all of the packs as well - not an easy task.

xezi Jan 30 2014, 5:11am replied:

I contribute to his... pocket only with a modest Paypal donation, thats what I meant at 1st post. I'm a mass effect believer, meaning that if 90% of darkplaces downloaders contributed with this tiny amount, Rygel could be working exclusively with this kind of thing. That would apply to others, I'd say, like yourself. For there are plenty of examples, like mobile fw, hacks, game mods, works like yours, that bring more quality to products that original companies staff do. And that's awesome, and something to value.

I have a question: How can I add other custom mods/maps to epsilon so they were playable? For example Malice, Rubicon, Shrak and others. Cuz I put folder with mod into main directory then enter game browse mods turn on the mod I prefer and the game quits :( Please give me tutorial on that.
