In 2011 I started browsing the latest graphical/sound quake mods, putting together a pretty build using LordHavoc's darkplaces, rygel's ultra textures packs, the reforged packs and a variety of mods, to play quake original. Anyone can do the same, however the hassle comes when you have to browse the quakeone forums, stumbling to find the posts which detail what cvars and what configs/files you have to overwrite etc in order to get each mod to work. I literally spent as much time getting the mods working as playing the game. So I put together a nice-looking build of quake original and it's expansions called epsilon for everybody to get into, without getting into the hassle of config files and searching to find every available mod then getting them to work! The main quake build also includes the original shareware first quarter of the quake game - it is easily upgraded to the full game by dropping in the pak0.pak and pak1.pak files from the full game's id1 directory (more details below).

Installation and running:
You'll need the Quake epsilon build installed on your computer.
1. Unzip this expansion's zip file to your quake folder (not into the ID1 sub-folder).
2. Copy pak0.pak file from the "hipnotic" folder of your commercial Quake Scourge of Armagon (mission pack 1) installation to your quake epsilon "hipnotic" folder.
3. Change your graphics mode (even if you've already done this before, you need to redo this every time you install a mission pack/third party map-pack to set it up properly):
Windows: run (double-click) epsilon - change graphics quality.bat
Mac/linux: run (double-click) epsilon - change graphics quality - linux and mac
4. Run the game:
Windows: run (double-click) quake - mission pack 1.bat
Mac: run (double-click) quake - mission pack 1 - mac
Linux: run (double-click) quake - mission pack 1 - linux x64 glx
For legal reasons I obviously can't include the scourge of Armagon pak0.pak or soundtrack in this pack. Usually it's about $2.50-$5 on steam, depending on sales. If you're using steam the pak0.pak file will be in your steam/steamapps/common/quake/hipnotic folder.
The soundtrack is not included with the steam download but can be found around the net. Instead I've included an alternative soundtrack by Baz (Barry Gibson).
* There are two bugs that I am aware of with the darkplaces engine and MP1: one is the gold door at the end of the first level. If you do not approach it in the correct manner, it will not open.
Workaround is: if you move to the left side of the door and slide slowly to the right while pushing into the door, you'll get it to open.
The bug also occurs in HIP3M4 (The Gauntlet) on the Silver door. If you approach it running or to the left of it, it won't open. Approach it slowly and from the right. These are the only two bugs I have encountered in quake and it's mission packs under the darkplaces engine.
* If you experience rainbow-coloured textures for some objects in Mission Pack 1 or Mission Pack 2 - copy the pak0.pak from your legal copy of MP1 or MP2 into the appropriate directory (hipnotic or rogue) - cause you've forgotten to do that! ;)
