Long ago, when the word 'Hiigara' rang only as a hollow dream, the kiith of Kharak never imagined they would walk the Path to Victory. But, when they reclaimed their Homeworld and proclaimed themselves 'Hiigaran', they believed they had reached their goal. How wrong they were. 150 years after Hiigaran landfall, conflict rages across the Galaxy... Path to Victory is a multiplayer and skirmish mod for Homeworld 2 that adds new units to both Vaygr and Hiigaran Races as well as enabling the Keepers, Raiders and Kadeshi as playable races.
Not so much presenting new ships as reviving images of well known hiigaran ships and showing off my first ever and crappy map: Ice Fields.
It isn't quite finished but the idea will be that you fight around an ice field. In the center of the map there will be a large ice chain that blocks capital ship movement (forcing them to go over or unter).
There will be a single capturable research station in the center of the map (once I get round to modeling it) which will be able to dock and repair fighters as well as offer sensor data for most of the map.
Expect some more new maps and new map objects in future... as well as a 0.0.5 release near the end of this week or the beginning of the weekend. For now, enjoy the cool ice!

I can't judge if it's crappy or not (as you told us), but I what I really like is the new enviroment, the tactical dimension added (I loved the asteriod belts in EaW) and also the ideas with the central stations to battle for, and the advantages it offers to the controlling facton.
So therefore you already have done a very, very great job :P

I think adding focal points (one or multiple ones) will allow for more interesting games. You can go for the map object but you'll probably have to defend it to maintain an advantage. Sounds like something for the Hiigaran Defense Fleet or the Keepers.
Or you can go around on your own time, staying away from the main field of battle and instead focus on raiding attacks or skirmishes. Somethng the Vaygr or Kadeshi are more likely to do.
I'm also thinking of adding a few asteroids strewn around the smaller maps so you can actually move with some degree of freedom and still maintain resourcing operations. Not a lot, but some...
hmmm, thats a new twist in homeworld maps. this make me wonder tho, whats a good fire map... exploded planit? too close to a star?! a nebula colored red?!?! (continues to ramble on)

Mine field... would also be interesting... so many possibilities. I was also thinking of a few more darker maps. All the HW2 maps so far are so bloody bright.
i think you can ask Osiris_Xi for one of TPoF mod maps, they all seem to have an awesome star background with one light source that gives it a dark and more realistic view.
The backgrounds aren't really a problem. Just find some base image from a nasa probe or whatever and use bits and pieces from that + some self-edited parts.
It just takes time...
