This is a total conversion of Sins of a Solar Empire. five new playble races will be introduced each with differing play styles and apearances. The focus of this mod will be small and large scale fleet stratagy and empire building.
Ok another ingame pic just to show im not just using the 3d modeling tool to waste time.
Ok i now have a question for the viewers. Whilst looking over my file ive noticed that models such as this one are a bit....Extravagant, in that some models such as this one can be as 4mb which is roughly 40 times the size of most sins ships. So heres the question do you want a mod where ships such as this a fairly limited but just a detailed and all have multiple weapons types and also possibly have indivdual names printed on the side as part of the texture. Or do u want me to go through and basically strip down the detail where ever possible to try and bring the models back under control. Mini dumping shouldnt be a big problem either way with the new patch but im not sure what kindof PC will be required to play until some time for now.
How many polygons are these ships? That's what really matters in size.
i think each is somthing like 7000 polygons
Do you have extra faces?
As a reference..., I have a about ten models between 2-3 MB and one model that is 5 MB that I haven't released yet. I may try optimizing the last one some more but it will work.
Is the 7000 polys in just triangles? or is it around 14000k triangles? I have several models around 3MB that are 10k triangles that work well. But most of the others are near the existing Sins thresholds (500-1.5k fighters, 1.5-3k frigates/cruisers, 4-8k capitals in triangles with a few exceptions).
Another thing to consider is the size of the texture. For frigates and cruisers I've gone with 1024x1024 to keep the memory usage down. I've increased it to 2048x1024 or 2048x2048 only when necessary. Learning to unwrap by hand will allow you to make more use of a smaller texture and get good details.
You might find other ways to save on memory like using a common trade and refinery ship for all races. Reusing some structures, etc.
Even with the changes Stardock/Ironclad is making it won't allow the game to go over 2GB so being memory conscious up front will save you some headaches down the road.
each of those ships roughly 14k triangle and about 3-4mb each
personally i love detail on a ship
Wont matter if the ships looks pastey and horrible..
Im all for detail
You can do a lot with the texture, it does not need all the detail in mesh.
As you read your lore, you get the feeling that when you lose a few ships, its a bad thing... you do so much as get that from SoaSE. I'd like to see less ships, but with better textures, longevity, models, and abilitys.
Please, dont conform to the SoaSE mod template. Try a new style of gameplay.
yes that exactly what i want small fleets hell ive actually been talking about randomly generating a name for ever ship on the field which will be printed on the side as part of the texture. So u can have frigate called the normandy if your lucky.
Does the engine allow for randomized textures? I havent seen it in any other mods. One request though, please don't ACTUALLY name frigates (Like capital ships). I've seen it done in mods, and it leads to a good bit of confusion.
its purly aesthetic and has no other purpose then to help personalize the ships. The name wont apear in its UI or general description itll simply be written on the side. Also due to the limited number of ships it wont be to confusing to have frigates named. But once again its simply aesthetic.
