The..."spike" on the top make it looks a bit stupid, i wonder what was that for, to help snipers locate them in trenches x_X ?

it's a kind of knight in russian culture
(and he's incredibly strong)
so, this hat was supposed to look like bogatyr's helmet to show all enemies how strong red army soldiers are.
also, it was invented in the time of civil war in Russia (1917-1922) and called Budyonnovka after the name of red commander Semyon Budyonny, who was the leader of the first Cavalry Army ("Konarmiya"), which operated alone without infantry and was intended to make a kind of Blitzkrieg strikes, but with cavalry instead of tanks. I think Guderian took something from Konarmiya's experience
