It'll end as the same resolution as the other units that are currently in the game, not entirely sure why 3ds max reduces the resolution whilst you're editing the model but I can only assume it's to help improve performance of you're working with a very large model
If you haven't tried it already, you should be able to up the viewport resolution from "viewport configuration>Display performance". Upper left of the viewport window, the + icon.
