wow.. even mods are doing micro-transactions? That is absolutely ludicrous, not to mention possibly illegal. I can't find a copy of D2's EULA, but usually this hinders monetization in case of modification by one rule or another.

I believe that earning gold is by participating various ways in the community. Theres already a gold badge system in place:

I'm guessing that forum gold will be much like that, only it will actually be useful to use to get various items and such.
Of course there will be a indirect way to support the developer, like donating enough may give you a gold badge & forum gold to go along with it. Aside from that, its just an incentive to get people to be active in the community. Not just sharing experiences, helping others, but also trading items for gold, buying and selling with a universal currency rather than just the rather unintuitive X item for X item.
