Mario Kart Source aims to bring the fun and excitement of the Mario Kart series to the PC though the powerful Source engine used in Half Life 2. We hope to create the ultimate version of Mario Kart (MK) by combining all of the best aspects into one game. We're not simply recreating one version of MK, but using the best parts of each. We want to have all the traditional weapons, characters, and maps but also bring out new weapons that make game-play interesting. We're redesigning the maps so that they keep their appeal, but truly utilize the power of the source engine. We plan to have at least 16 different characters, all the ones you know and love as well as some others from the Super Mario World. We want this mod to reflect what you guys want in a Mario Kart game. Have some cool weapon ideas? What special characters do you want? What about maps? We want to know! And now the question on everybody's mind, a beta release. “When is it?” “Is it a closed beta?”...

Haha! Today I'm going to introduce one character, one weapon and one level. But first, some news from the team. The main coder, OneEyed, is still working on the kart prediction. Prediction is something very complex between the player and the server, and it's designed to reduce the ping and make the game more fluid for the slower connections. The Source Engine is not thought for the race games, so we are doing everything from scratch.
Okay. Do you remember the Green Shell? The Red Shell is looking the same... with only one difference: it's red. Simple, right? The real difference is in how it functions: the red shell follows the player right in front of you until it hits him or any other obstacle. If the Red Shell is shot backwards, it acts just like a Green shell. Oh, by the way, you can keep your shells behind your kart as a shield against the other shells!
Yoshi is a worshipped dinosaur, he is the Mario's best friend and he follows him around like a dog in all his adventures. Yoshi is able to say a few words, like "Yoshi", "Yoshi?", "Yoshi!" and "Yah-ooo!". Without a doubt he is the most popular racer of all those in Mario Kart. Some members of the forum are dedicated to him like a cult... They are sick.
I'm closing this news with a famous level: Doubledeck! This awesome level from MK64 will be in MKS, for our great pleasure. Thanks to KillerMapper

I think the only reason Yoshi would be the most popular is because he is a little better offroad than the others. Oh, and Luigi all the way.
People liked Yoshi because he was given a better and at the time, cooler image then everyone else. And also it was one of the few games that let you use him (Until he started being a party of every game). Most people were young at this point and a dinosaur seemed cooler then a fat plumber and a mushroom-head.
Nice, but I'm really begging you here to just round mario's face a bit more, he looks to shapy, if you know what I mean, I'm pretty sure the source engine was capable of more per model.
Anyways, really nice, I really mean that, this stuff's amazing.
