Well, it's pretty impressive, I might say it's on the same level as the original 1993 movie (the one that has nothing to do with your mod ;))
But didn't you say that you want to make lifelike realistic models based on actual research by professionals - can't see anything from that.
Deinonychus was definetly feathered, with wings on it arms and tails.
This is looking great, no question, but it's more like a movie monster than a realistic dinosaur (Same for the Albertosaurus)

Well for this dinosaur they want to make an exception and make it look scary, but for the alberto I do not agree with you at all please explain more about the alberto.

Like this?: Dinoruss.com

It’s hard to say for sure that all species had feathers. We do indeed know that some did have feathers (in fact most medium to small theropods are suspected of having some feather like covering).

Using existing fossils we also can't always say exactly how far feathers extended. If you run a search on the term "apteria" you'll find that almost all species of birds have some unfeathered areas (often invisible because they are covered by feathers growing in other parts of the body).

We had an expert lined up to give advice about the most up to date layout and placement of feathers but our modelers had doubts about the technical feasibility of rendering feathers. So, instead we are modeling theropod skin to the standard of twenty years ago.

This isn't as bad as it sounds: There are many, many gaps in scientific knowledge. We are undoubtedly going to be wrong in some areas. In a few areas we will never know that we are wrong because the science will never discover the relevant fact. In other areas science will manage to discover that we are wrong - its only a matter of time. Twenty years in the future or the past is an unimaginably small amount of time by geological standards.

So, the technology forces us to make a conscious choice. Is that better or worse than not knowing that there is even a choice in the first place?

You have to remember this is a mod, and we do have limitations. We have a very good research team and are very happy with their feedback.

Anyway, would you rather have a fluffy raptor, or one to scare the crap out of you in the crysis environment? Were not making a documentary, and thus have to find the right balance for entertainment and realism. Considering that the new Turok game includes a complete abolishment of dinosaur species, and what with the resources they have, I think people can give us a bit of slack, however were not going to please everyone.

Nobody is saying that all dinosaurs are feathered, but it's pretty sure that almost all theorpods were feathered. It's even possible to reconstruct the evolution of feathers thanks to the known foosils.
Ofcourse, there are species with more primitve feathers, but that are not the dromeosaurids (the group were Deinonychus belongs to)
We know from species like Velociraptor and Microraptor that the dromeosaurids had pennaceous feather and we can also be pretty sure - through comparative science and fossils - how "far it was extented".
In fact even tyrannosaurids had plumaceous feathers, as we can know from the early tyrannosaurid species Dilong.
Though it is possible after bergmann's law that the big ones like Albertosaurus und Tyrannosaurus lost most of it (compare to recent elephants)
I can understand the technical point, looking at the original crysis chicken.

It is one thing not to know something (and because of that have the liberty to fill the gap with the artists imagination) and another thing to know something and do it wrong. You can't say you want to model lifelike dinosaurs and then build a themepark monster - your statement about scaring the crap out of the player speaks for itself.
Do you think a naked tiger would be scary ;) A naked Deinonychus would basically look like a skinny thanksgivingday turkey.
Well, look how there is a beautiful diversity in birds today, use a little bit of the secretary bird here, a little king shrab and crested fireback there, and try to make a camouflage out of the palawan peacock pheasant - well, atleast you could also go the no-balls way of JP3 ;)
Wasn't there a part in UK Gamer where you said you are thinking of a educational purpose? Well, than take the once-in-a-lifetime change, your members have certainly the skill to overpower this ridiculous wrong BBC crap.
It would be a shame to see you guys make basically the same not science covered dinosaur-monster mash like every other dinosaur game known mankind.
I want realistic animals, not fleshhungry, stupid halloween monsters.
It's the 21th century, why not make a 21th century dinosaur game?
@kingofkong
The albertosaur isn't that striking like the Deinonychus. It's certainly modelled after the JP:Lost World T.rex baby, if you compare their faces and it seems to has not the correct high -> 3,5m for it and 17m for the Brachiosaurus - there is something fuzzy on the screenshots, but I can't say sure.
But I do like the first shown Albertosaurus pictures, they're pretty neat

i'm guessing you have no idea how hard it is to make nice looking feathered dinosaurs..
and the result might not be what you expected/hoped for.
i think they're right about doing the best they can, there's no need to make a 100% scientifically correct game..

Of course I know that it's hard, almost impossible to do realistic hair/feathers and so on in a game enviroment.
They could try to make a texture with and without and decide THEN what looks better.
But at least they could add the pinions and the "structure" on the tail, which isn't that hard and leave most parts of the body unfeathered. And add secretary bird heads feathers like JP3 which the Deinonychus could erect when attacking/nervous/whatever.
The head and the neck doesn't need feathers, most species which are carnivor have lost it there because the blood would caulk it.
So the fierce face would stay ;)
@LWR
Not like this picture of Caudypteryx at dinoruss. Btw. it's a pretty bad reconstruction, too. The feathers of it would have looked more like the one of the kiwi or young chicks. It was more a pelage then the aerodynamtic coat of modern day birds.
Yeah, we don't need scientific correct games, why not add fat dumb Apatosaurids in swamps and an upright T.rex :P
They can push it to the limit, so they should

and why would they choose after all that work?
have you ever made a model yourself?
they'd have to re-UVmap and retexture the whole thing if they don't like it afterwards..

Wow. That's amazing. I love how you've chosen Deinonychus too; that's so much more realistic than choosing the tiny Velociraptor.
