The French uniforms of the age where a little more shoddy perhaps an officer would have worn that. And an Englishman is just a Scotsman that got arse raped by Roman's until year 410 when they took to more brutal forms of arse raping (the dark ages).

But anyway back to the French they wore white leggings using a material the absorbed moisture far better than cotton witch made it faster to dry but as a result it was often rather dirty looking on the best of occasions ranging from white-silver-brown.
Despite the expense of their elegant uniforms they where often unkempt due to environmental effects.

I was exaggerating about the officer bit But the french are well known for there grey/white leggings judging by the shorter coat tails that would be one of there more modest uniforms anyway but still...

In fact I imagine that it would be an indicator as to how battle hardened the French soldiers you where fighting are; snow white = easy targets, covered in brown stains and blotches = they might know a thing or two.

but now i'm just going off on a rant so I'll stop
