This Doom mod, jDoom, based on the Doomsday engine upgrades your copy of Doom, or the shareware version, to a slick new engine designed for a modern windows enviroment.

Also, not a sprite in sight. These aren't the kind of models you find in modern games - they're roughly on a par with Quake's, except of course that Doom was always much brighter and more colourful.

Detail textures are visual effects on walls and stuff that don't become clear until you get quite close. They counteract the normal blurriness that 3D accelerated games use to prevent big ugly pixels, and jDoom is a 3D accelerated game, believe it or not. These are gorgeous.

Make sure you get all the files from the site including jDoom itself, the jDoom 3D models pack and the jDoom Detailed Textures.

You know you can disable the coronas? (I think, I've never tried it) And you don't have to use the 3D models if you don't want. They just help if you combine them with mouselook style controls, so if you look at them from above the bad guys don't end up looking flatter than Milla Jovovich.

Never tried PRBoom BTW, so I guess I can't compare it to that one.

I don't disagree that JDoom "looks better" to some people, but I don't like the coronas that are added onto just about everything. Personally I prefer Doom ports to look like Doom as well as play like Doom.

That, and I don't believe 3D models fit in a 2D engine.

Why? What makes JDoom feel pathetic? It looks fantastic and feels very good to me. It's one of the few ports (I know of) that supports 3D models so they don't look like cardboard cutouts when you look at them the wrong way. And while it doesn't support the jazzy bits of the other ports (like room-over-room, slopest) neither did the original doom, so you're not really missing much now are you?

Yech, jDoom makes Doom feel so pathetic. PRBoom > jDoom any time of the day.
