MCCC

« Justice the founder of my fabric mov'd:

To rear me was the task of power divine,
Supreme wisdom, and primeval love. »

This is how a poet described Inferno in the XIII century. Hope that my "Inferno" will also be created fairly and most importantly truthfully. I'm going to tell this story with the truth. The word "truth" I oppose to "realism". My objective is not to depict, but to designate. This means that I need to show what is not, so that everyone can see what was.

One of the important concept that I wanted to convey with the help of this work is the simple fact that the Middle Ages are much closer to Antiquity than the Renaissance and Modern Era. Therefore, I will not oppose Ancien to Medieval, but emphasize continuity. Let me remind you that one of the symbols of Ancient Rome, the Capitoline Wolf, as shown by the study, was cast in the 11-13 centuries. This most likely happened after 1146, when the Roman citizens rebelled against the authority of the Popes and restored the Roman Senate. On the other hand, the Lion in Piazza San Marco in Venice, which has become a symbol of the "Most Serene Republic". It has been decorating the city since the XIII century, but it was created much earlier. Presumably, it was cast in ancient Assyria. Older than Rome!
One of the titles of the Popes was "Pontifex" - a priestly office in ancient Rome. etc.

Pontifex Bonifacius VIII - is the protagonist of this story. This Pope ruled the Holy See at a difficult moment, which preceded the greatest decline of the Congregation. He became the last Pope to aspire to world domination in the Middle Ages. Contemporaries condemned Boniface for striving for greatness. During the short period of the papacy, many images of him were created, more than any other pope before that. His portraits were created by the greatest artists - the sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio and the painter Giotto di Bondone. There is one statue in Bologna (you could see it in the preview). It was created by an unknown master of the XIII century Manno di Bandino. All that was left was the name and this statue. Making it, this master did not imitate ancient forms, as his contemporaries already did. Because of this, his gestures and plasticity look naive and awkward. But I noticed something else. If you look closely, you can see something ancient in this statue. As if this is not the Pope in front of you, but the King of Upper Egypt. Bulging eyes and a strange expression...

I am not a supporter of mysticism, therefore I believe that Inferno does not exist, otherwise how could Pope Boniface VIII exist there.

Anno Domini MCCC ante diem VIII Kalendas Martias (8 days before the March Calends or March 1, 1300) Pope Boniface VIII announces the Jubilee Year.
The beginning of the 14th century was the end of the Medieval Warm Period. In 1314-16, rains were falling in Europe, destroying crops and leading to famine. Soon the plague began... Italy during these years suffered from earthquakes that left thousands of people without homes. Many of them, fearing the end of the world, came to the main Catholic shrine, St. Peter's Basilica in Rome for Christmas Mass. Seeing this, Boniface wanted to alleviate the suffering of Christians, he came up with the idea to arrange a mass indulgence on the occasion of the descent of the 13th century from the birth of Christ. On February 22, according to the Julian calendar, the pope, from the balcony of the loggia of the Lateran Palace, announced to the assembled believers a new bull "Antiquorum habet fida relatio", which began with the words "There is an ancient tradition worthy of faith".

INFERNVM.M.CCC. - is virtual mod. This means you don't have to wait for its release date. It already exists. The proof of this is that he is already on this page.
