Heath Games' Second installment of the Horror Mod series, "Half-Rats". Taking place in July of 1883. Soundtrack courtesy of Ague. Beware, this mod is pretty much NOTHING like Half-Life.
Yes, vending machines, you freaks. Feeling downtrodden? Get yourself some concessions, some vituals, some libations. If you've got the cash - these things have your creep tonight. All mechanical, no maniacal. You can trust the machines. Yes...the "Vend-o-Matic"...for all your vending needs.
*Does NOT sell sheep intestine condoms*
great idea better than the vendor
The vendor just didn't make sense where these are...I needed a solution...
well for a horror mods its either a lifeless machine or some kind of death incarnate bargening with your for souls or dead ppl or sometihng
you didn't have many options : )
Like Bioshock.
I actually wasn't even thinking about Bioshock until after I thought to put these in the game! It's a fitting homage, though, eh?
Better sing a catchy 1800s type tune
perhaps a music box or a player piano
There it is!
They had those back in the day?
Coin operated tobacco vending machines go back as far as the early 1600s. The more modern, traditional variety can be traced back to the late 1800s
Basically: Yes :P
This is so much better than the vendor.
There's still going to be vendors, too.
Like Clubfoot Larry, and Jack-Eyed Jim. And apparently I made a sign for "**********'s Dry Goods and Sundries"...so...yep.
No, there's really only one human vendor - "O'Flannery".
I had no idea these vending machines even exsited back in the day. I thought it was all human operated.
There's a man inside the machine.
Where these machines are going to be located, if there was a dude up in there, I'd be loathe to trust it. Chances are, it ain't gonna' be a dude...but...A TINY DEMON!
Oh, these damned things... Their bloody tune is so loud (and annoying) that it's almost painful to stand next to them... And they play it even when you just running by close enough... Eventually, I just went and processed those bloody ...\hrp\sound\ambience\hrp_vend1.wav
...\hrp\sound\ambience\hrp_vend2.wav
...\hrp\sound\ambience\hrp_vend3.wav
and
...\hrp\sound\ambience\hrp_vend4.wav
using FormatFactory, reducing the sound volume by 50%, and then doing the same with the output file a few more times until their volume changed to the same level (or, maybe, even a bit lower) than the rest of the sounds in the mod.
Aso, it's a shame that those sounds are not played randomly, but are just bound to specific instances of those vending machines instead - it would be much cooler if they were random, and it would scare the **** out of people when vend3 would suddenly play on a very rare occasion, from a vending machine that stands in a very quiet place (like the first vending machine the player encounters in a house with a bar, shortly after robbing the bank in Eminence) after the machine would almost always play the first one and sometimes play the second or the fourth line, because the first time a vending machine activated in that dark, quiet, empty house, I almost shat myself (mostly because it was SO ******* LOUD, comparing to the rest of the sounds in the game) but I wasn't scared at all (rather disgusted and confused) when one of those machines played the hrp_vend3.wav - just because I could barely hear it because of the loud and annoying carnival music playing around in that location. Also, I think I've never heard the hrp_vend4.wav at all.
Also, how much time has passed since that publican and other normal people fled Eminence and it was burned (because a lot, if not most of the houses' interiors in Eminence look as if a fire happened there) and how come the dried meats, and, especially, meat pies in those vending machines are still edible and not rotten, if most of this town's inhabitants look like severely decomposed corpses, and the town itself is all burned and rotten?
I mean, I had severe food poisonings from eating meat pies 3 ******* times during the summer of 2019, and one time when I was a student, 10+ years ago, and they were hardly made more than 1 day before I ate them (and most probably - just a few hours, actually)!
