Post news Report RSS Half-Life: Insecure - Reworked Intro-Chapter 1 Maps

The subway intro and Chapter 1 has been totally redesigned. A comparison between the old design and the newer levels.

Posted by on

Greetings!

Today i will show you the redesigned Intro and Chapter 1 maps while compared to the original from Part One Demo for a possible future update and of course, the final release of the mod.

So, of course one of the reasons is to bring these old designs back from 2018 to today's standards. And simplified design with my current knowledge of the editor. Most of these older chapters were too confusing in the scripting part and made it harder to modify some bits.

So, before the screenshots of the redesigned chapters, the main menu has been modified for more consistency with the mod page scheme:

Current Main Menu from Part One Demo:

Modified Main Menu

So, the changes are of course, the color scheme which assimilates to the ModDB profile and the background has been darkened to match the UI colors. And added an title logo.

Now, let's get started with the reworked Intro and Chapter 1 maps comparison.

SCREENSHOTS:

Current Start Subway Map from Part One Demo #1 (insecure00)

Reworked Start Subway Map #1 (insecure00)

So, this scene was not remade from scratch, but heavily modified from the old design as you can tell with the roof. Removed some unnecessary bits and increasing the size of the place.

Current Start Subway Map from Part One Demo #2 (insecure00)

Reworked Start Subway Map #2 (insecure00)

new subway2

In case contrary of the previous change, this was remade from scratch. The place is now more smaller, removed the excessive use of the crates and also removing some of the roaming NPC's.

Current Middle Subway Map from Part One Demo (insecure00a)

Reworked Middle Subway Map (insecure00a)

Probably the biggest change i've ever made to a map. Completely removed the silo environment for a more subway station feel, featuring more NPC's walking around than the previous map.

Current Final Subway Map from Part One Demo (insecure00b)

Reworked Final Subway Map (insecure00b)

Totally simplified from the previous one to match the entrance of Blue Shift's security area than Half-Life's one. Also bringing an NPC while you're waiting.

Current Area 5 Lobby from Part One Demo (insecure01)

Reworked Area 5 Lobby (insecure01)

Also trying to match the Blue Shift's security area lobby but removing the second floor and added an sign of the required places to progress that the older map did not have.

Current Area 5 Personnel Facilities from Part One Demo (insecure01)

Reworked Area 5 Personnel Facilities (insecure01)

Although this looks copied from Blue Shift, this is totally made from scratch following the structure of Blue Shift's map and it looked decent enough.

Current Area 5 Video Surveillance from Part One Demo (insecure01)

Reworked Area 5 Video Surveillance (insecure01)

Same as before, designing from scratch following the structure with the Blue Shift's one. Also, it has completely different cameras following the plot of the Half-Life universe.

Current Armory from Part One Demo (insecure01)

Reworked Armory (insecure01)

Same as the previous ones, although modified a little bit like those pillars in the window frames. Also simplified the mag guy script unlike the older map.

Current Subway Lobby from Part One Demo (insecure01a)

Reworked Subway Lobby (insecure01a)

Another big change from the previous version, removed the laboratory environment, added NPC's roaming, talking to each other, added signs for a more clear route and more simplified in general.

Current G-Man appearance in a tram from Part One Demo (insecure01a)

Reworked G-Man appearance in a tram (insecure01a)

More smaller than the previous one but much more to the point and removed some time of waiting to walk across the bridge. Also reworked the Subway's design.

Current Maintenance Area from Part One Demo #1 (insecure01a)

Reworked Maintenance Area #1 (insecure01a)

Also wanted to replicate Blue Shift's one but with different placement and removed the yellow tint lighting.

Current Maintenance Area from Part One Demo #2 (insecure01a)

Reworked Maintenance Area #2 (insecure01a)

Same as before. Just with different crate placement and with diminish lighting.

Current Broken Subway section from Part One Demo (insecure01b)

Reworked Broken Subway Section (insecure01c)

So, the big change was the direction of the tram, it goes forward instead. And added more destruction to the environment while the experiment it's going on.

END NOTE:

And that should be it. The last reworked map it's still on development and learning some techniques to create a more believable scene. So, these maps of course should be available on the final release of the mod and probably an update for the Part One Demo when Part Two is released, only time will tell. and it will also come with the source files so you can inspect and modify some of the stuff.

Lovely work on the enhancements.. I actually like the 1st version in the 1st picture even more than the 2nd version. :D I did like the fact that everything looked huge in your demo yet not blocky or empty at all. It made the facility feel huge. :) But as stated before the new ones are of epic proportions as well.

I'm glad you liked it! Sure, I've practiced quite a bit with the design of the facility and a lot was trial and error.

I second that, the first (current state) maps convey a ridiculous huge vibe - especially the gate with the robot walker, which is kinda lost in some reworked areas

Really digging how the changes seem to reflect a more realistic facility such as reinforced floor plating for the mech to walk on to the tram navigating a much safer environment rather then passing silo's and industrial constructs.

Probably was due to the fact that the old levels were recycled from another mod i've worked on. So these newer levels are designed specifically for this mod..

Tried the beginning of current version so far and it's pure awesomeness! Mapping is very accurate and close to original style. I wish you the best luck with the development of your mod!
