The original starless void was creepy, effective, stark, evocative. It helped the portal stand out instead of being lost against the background as it is now.
The rest of the Xen was colourful, filled, endless; to step through a portal and find yourself surrounded by complete blackness felt like a jab of unexpected.
Filled you with suspense; something scary was about to happen.
completely agreed, this just seems like black mesa stuff and if people are playing enriched as a way to replay HL over BM in the first place its likely they don't like BM so why even bring in BM inspired things like this?
i think he did a really great job with the skyboxes, most definitely an improvement over the low resolution generic imagery from the original ones. however i will agree that the pitch black background in the nihilanth portal sequence definitely had it's charm
