Freeworlds: Tides of War is a fan built Star Wars total conversion mod for Digital Anvil's Freelancer game that was released several years ago. When fans began to make mods for Freelancer, one of the many things people were keen on seeing was a Freelancer mod based on the Star Wars universe developed by George Lucas. Freeworlds and Tides of War were the answer to this outcry. The development team of both mods have now joined forces to create an epic new Star Wars TC, Freeworlds: Tides of War.

OMG a book of rules :)

As much as i know how much work it is to write such guidelines and the time and effort that has been put into this, i tend to believe you will have a further heap of work to do control it. And i believe the new folks will be frightened to read all the text. Probably you should think about making an abstract - understandable in short what you want from the players... Just saying as you wanted feedback.

Fair enough. We're giving ground rules for people to play in and an explanation on how this works. If people want to roleplay on the site, I'm sure this book will be very useful for them. Furthermore, if they're RP orientated, I'm sure they won't have too much difficulty reading this short summary.

I think it won't be nearly as difficult to control as you envision but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Thanks for the feedback, nevertheless.

I think this is a fair criticism. If the mod is very successful, expect to see a lot of people who just want to play out some space battles and so jump right in without taking the time to read the guide.

A few automated server messages reminding people of RP guidelines as well as game rules, or some kind of quick-start guide that players have to read through to get into the game would be a great idea.

Since players will be looking to join factions, they need the approval of a high-ranking faction member. So maybe a simpler way of doing it would be for the faction member to quickly test them in a scenario to make sure they know what's what.

But then, I'm not talented enough to make a mod like this, so feel free to ignore me. XD

Anyone who cant follow this needs to go back to playing halo.

I love the system. The more regimented the boundaries the better your results are going to be.

Its good to know the forum side of things will be clean and well organized.

It's great to see that in-game roleplaying will be important enough to have t's own damned guide. I was a big fan of the RP in the older versions of the mod, but it didn't seem to catch on. I'm glad that it's now getting a greater focus.

Yes, RP is going to be much more important in this mod. We also are looking for players to populate our server with this type of mentality.

Wow, That was quite a bit to read but very insightful, and I believe it to be necessary. I am fairly new to RP so I learned some aspects I have overlooked in my RP. I was not sure if I wanted to begin playing another game but the guide got me all excited. I am looking forward to create a complex but fun character to grow old in the FW:ToW universe.

I've been thinking about this and I've come up against a bit of a problem: what about people who suffer from issues with literacy, but would still like to roleplay? wouldn't a simpler, more concise RP guide be a godsend for them?

Furthermore, what compromise will be made with people who simply don't have a mind for roleplaying? I've known people to claim that anyone who can't read a dense rulebook or do immersive, imaginative RP is in some way inferior, but I seriously doubt that the talented people behind this mod will exhibit that kind of stupid attitude.

Will it be possible for players to dive in to the game and be accomodated with a bare minimum of RP? Or will there be strict requirements on how much a player should do? I'd hate to see people get excluded from playing this mod.

These are excellent questions, and actually quite similar to some that were asked on the forums just the other day.

I think a simpler RP guide is an excellent idea. Seeing that I wrote this one, I'd be happy to write that one up as well. This one was sort of dense, I know - but it was meant to establish the rules and boundaries of our entire roleplaying structure, not just be an introductory guide.

Members of the Roleplaying/Lore team will also be dedicated to working with players on their stories, so there will be a good support system for anyone who needs writing advice, or for newer roleplayers just getting their feet wet.

As for people who don't really enjoy roleplaying: The simple answer is that while we strongly encourage players to participate in the roleplaying meta-game, it is by no means a requirement. Of course, the reason we strongly encourage roleplaying is that (which we establish in the guide) the RP will be able to directly influence events on the server.

Still, that does not require every player to actively participate in roleplay. We want players of all kinds to be able to get involved, whether they have zero interest in roleplay, or if it's their favorite thing ever. We're all about inclusion - how much the player wants to be involved is up to them.

The only things we'll ask of all our players is that they respect the server's roleplaying rules (i.e. no spamming chat channels with out of character messages), and that their character name isn't completely ridiculous.

I hope this addresses your concerns, and please don't hesitate to ask more.

Don't forget to register at if you haven't already!

Ah roleplay, it's a fantastic thing for online games and greatly and richly improves any online experience. It adds a new dimension to a PC game and makes it a lot better than just normally talking to static npcs all the time.

I've had much experience roleplaying on Neverwinter Nights; such a game that still has not only roleplay servers, but densely populated ones.

I love Freelancer, and to find out it has a roleplaying server is fantastic. Gives me a reason to reinstall it.

Thanks for creating this mod!
