A mod for Victoria II Heart of Darkness that continues the legacy of the Divergences : An Alter Vicky mod created by Kinniken. HPM version by Capitanloco6/MajorMajor. In the Divergences mod there are PODs that are not bound to each other. The Duke of Burgundy decides to continue his support for the Plantagenets in the Hundred Years' War. The personal union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden survives and evolves into a unitary state. Isabel of Spain married a Portuguese prince instead of Ferdinand II. The Chenghua Emperor does not stop Ming China's explorations, but decides to pursue them with greater zeal than before.

Preview of the upcoming patch for the Divergences of Darkness Victoria II mod, focusing on the Mesoamerica. Today we're going to take a look at the struggle for emancipation of the Mexican slaves.

Posted by on

The main focus of the upcoming Divergences update will be content for Mexcio and Mesoameriga, a region which, though it had existing content, was missing flavour for the native peoples as well as the slaves of African descent.

Unlike in previous versions of Divergences, the choices you make during the Congress of Andagoya are going to have tangible consequences. Whereas before appeasing one group or the other effectively only meant some militancy maluses at worst, choosing to antagonise certain groups in the future update will result in large-scale revolts.

One such choice will have to be made regarding slavery, an institution which is still very much alive in Gran Colombia in 1836.

Slavery in Gran Colombia

Appeasing the Hacendados will contribute to your acceptance score to succeed in the Congress of Andagoya and keep Gran Colombia together - but it will set off a chain of events that will result in a slave revolt.

The Almasi Movement Spreads

The revolt will be headed by Father Ibrahima, a priest of Wolof descent who claims to be the herald of retribution against the masters that dare to keep the African man under the yoke. After some time Ibrahima will recieve a vision of blood drops on Maize stalks - the sign from God that the armed struggle must begin in earnest.

The Day of the Lord

At this point the player can choose between continuing as Gran Colombia or switching to Liberia and lead the former slaves to freedom.

Almasi Revolt Succeeds

Although Liberia might start out small, there's potential for expansion as the new state seeks to liberate slaves beyond Sonora.

Liberian Sonora

Liberate Lusitania

Lusitania Liberated

More ambitious expansion options include the option to liberate the Afro-Frankish slaves in Plantagenia and Septimania and, eventually, the Afro-Germanic people of the Caribbean.

Liberate afrofrankish

Liberate Caribbean

Caribbean cores

Stay tuned for more dev diaries as we gear up for release of the upcoming patch in the upcoming weeks. Find the mod here:

why does the slave revolt start out of sonora, wouldn't the state of Veracruz make more sense?
veracruz is way more suitable for a cash crop economy, has had sizable afro-mexican populations IRL and was actually mexico's staple port when it came to receiving/processing slaves from Africa

The 'meta' reason is that Veracruz is already involved in another of the revolts not shown in this post (that'll be shown in Part II). Of the remaning parts of Mexico that were available for the rebellion, I found maps showing Sonora as having plenty of plantations (sugar/coffee/tobacco) on its coast, so I thought I'd be an OK fit at least.
