Technically it should be pitch black. You're forgetting about the event horizon, the border surrounding the singularity. The singularity cannot be directly seen (At least not yet) because the event horizon, which is pitch black, shrouds it from direct viewing. Sorry, I'm really into astronomy and black holes and this sent me on a rant. If you can, you should try to make it more imposing and quite frankly, make it terrifying to look at. Make it so we don't want to go anywhere NEAR it. That's how it would be in real life, imposing, monstrous, terrifying. Sorry, I keep going on a roll.

Approach it from the side, otherwise the radiation jets coming from both the north and south poles of the black hole will obliterate you before you even get close.
