Report article Weekly Progress Report #8

We are back in action finally. I have a few screen shots from the Mall map, and just some other LMP stuff to announce.

We're back and ready to work on CI again.  I've had my break and loaded up the mall map a few weeks ago and decided to scrap it and restart.

This time around I will be working from the outside in, so I can get more of a feel for how the inside area is going to look like.

I have a few screens from the map as it has progressed over the past two weeks, some of them are older shots but show more in detail certain aspects of the map that are not particularly noticeable on the full view of the screen for the latest version of the map:

So, as you can see here we have the beginnings of an entrance to the mall.  If you would focus your atention to the right side of the shot you should see some of the detail I put in that you will understand more about on screen shot #3.

Reverse side of the previous shot, but focusing on the area with the broken glass/bent support beam.

And here is what I was talking about.  As you can see, the car has smashed into the sign, causing the support to deform.  This in turn caused all the damage to the glass and support structure from the last two screens.  In the newest version I also added up some "gorilla" bars to the area at the back of the screen, some of which show damage from where the car smashed through.

In this screen you can see that I added in a parking lot area and the actual entrance to the mall.  I also added in some grass areas and a side walk.  You will probably notice the bars mentioned previously middle-right in the screen.  I have also textured the "City 25 Mall" sign here.

And the newest screen shot.  This was taken this morning.  I have added a secondary circular section above the entrance and loading docks on each side to enclose the area.  The car groups you see that are pink/black checkered are Ep2 props, if anyone knows how to get those to display correctly let me know please!

I would also like to throw out there that Laughing Man Productions now has a blog and a Facebook fan site.  Visit our group page for the links.

As always, thanks for following CI!

The entrance to the mall looks ok, but try to add more quality work if you could.

the combine wouldn't open a mall! So the "city 25 mall" sign makes no sense.

lol, you have it backwards. Think about it in the content of the back story for the mod.

This was built after the Combine were driven away, they didn't rename the city.

Thought since I have not released the back story yet I guess thats an understandable misconception.

Maybe that will be what I do for next week as a tag-a-long.

You want us to think of a back story that we have no connection too? Thats kind of a contradiction don't you think?

lol, yeah thats what I realized half way through that post. Ill be releasing what I have of the back story and "interviews" next week with the WPR. Which should shed some light on exactly what is going on during the mod without directly giving anything too substantial away.

I think you could've worked on this a bit more before releasing an update.

maybe, maybe not, all depends on what your opinion of a weekly report is.

To me, a weekly report is a post or video or something showing off what you got done during that week.

It does not necessarily mean it has to look perfect, it doesn't even have to look good because you can work towards that goal during each week until the map(s) is(are) finished.

In all honesty you are a terrible modder... that bent sign is not bent proportionately at all not to mention its thickness is ridiculous. And malls do NOT belong in anything HL related... I'm not gonna say give up but I will say you have a LOT of work to do on your modding skills if you want anyone to take your mod seriously. Just being honest and blunt. Sorry if it offends... think of it as constructive criticism.

no not at all, i take everything as constructive criticism, even compliments.

Basically what I am attempting to do with this particular chapter is bring my mod and the l4d level design mentality together and make an over-mapped urban city environment.

Also keep in mind just because something wasn't a part of a game series doesn't mean a mod can not add it.

like the Care Bear mod, your comments would apply to that mod as well. Care Bears have nothing to do with TF2, but they put them in anyway.

Really when it comes down to it, sure there will be people that either do not like or hate my mod. And they are free to do so because I really won't/don't care about them too much except to improve my maps using their critique. but there will be people that like it and love it, and it is really for that last group that I am continuing to make this mod, even though I know there probably is going to be a lot of criticism on my semi-crappy mapping skillz.

but thanks for the insight.

I remember the days when 'modders' never had this mysterious burden to be 'serious'. It's his hobby, cut him some slack.
