Hello everybody!

This is my first Sub-Mod for a mod, and first project. I'm a C++/C programmer and a Sound Designer and I was really interested with the ZDoom engine which I spend some time to read and understand it's languages, DECORATE and ACS. I was really excited on how simple and easy it's languages were, and Brutal Doom is my best mod of all time, but I felt like many stuff should change from the mod which I did here the last few years. Due to how progressive and extensive my changes were, they were limitations on making this as a simple Add-On so I changed it to a Sub-Mod. There are thousands of changes everywhere, sound fixes and new abilities to do here so writing a changelog was painful, time consuming, and obviously not really fully listed. There are so many changes that I've even forgot to list there, but if I re-remember something, I will just edit the changelog without a warning, so don't think that the changelog is small, because it isn't. So far it is around 150 lines and everything in the Sub-Mod is awesome so far.

Oh sorry for not replying sooner! I just noticed your message here!

V13 has lost it's compatibility with Zandronum anymore. I guess in V14, compatibility with Zandronum will be returned.

Can you please give me more details? I can't understand what you are trying to say; Do you mean you want to make an Add-On for BDSE based on my own?

yeah, is it possible for you to do one or can i just toss this right over BDSE and be good to go?

Quaker540 Feb 14 2014, 2:42pm replied:

Listen, there a few problems with your statement;

1; I don't like BDSE.
2; BDSE made absolutely reversed versions of my own. Plus, I think BDSE stole my stuff in one of my old versions and the author didn't give any credit, which makes me angry. I mean, there a few sounds and sprites that they look EXACTLY like my own ones in one of my old versions.
3; I'd like to make an extended Add-On, but the work for it is just insane.

And if you throw it with BDSE, I'm sure that you will have a shitload of errors in the start-up causing the game to be unable to play.
I hope you can understand and well done to you for giving me the idea of making it extended in the future. Thanks for your comprehension!

hey its all good man. i just like BDSE cause it brings back that old school BD feel. pre-v19. though v20 might be great to stick with for a while before trying other add-ons/sub-mods

Quaker540 Feb 17 2014, 8:20pm replied:

But that's why I made this Add-On! :) Hahaha! Because I want to transfer BD to my personal taste! And OK, I'll tell you what I think about BDSE. Sounds are less satisfying and absolutely bad for me. Sprites are... not really well done. Coding is great, though. This is just what I think, and still, I made this Add-On, so I play it too!

-The old Minigun world sprite I was using is EXACTLY the same.
-BFG charging sound is even now very close.
-Many sounds (Like the Shotgun fire sound is exactly the same size) Also, SSG opening sound (Contained in the archive but not used) is also the same bytes.

And some other minor things that I've forgot about them.

Sadly I can't get this working. Even with the newer version. Always the "ifgame" error. Because I'm not completely sure what I'm doing I tried a combination of putting particular files in my skins and dragging others into my zandronum launcher.

Maybe I'm completely doing the process wrong, I don't know. But the readme isn't sufficient to help get it working for me.

I had this problem too. Thing is, you're not attentive enough. There is ANOTHER zip archive inside first zip archive. New version is the second one.
Not sure why author made it so confusing.

Quaker540 Feb 10 2014, 1:27pm replied:

To get this used, I just drag the file directly on Zandronum. In the files, I put an "GZDoom" or "ZND" (Zandronum) at the start of the name to understand what version does what. And, you don't seem to use the last version since I completely delete the "Ifgame" code. Does the problem still exist?

vladimireremeyev Feb 10 2014, 10:53am says:

I've looked around this add-on of sorts.

Very nice indeed, but I found few problems:
-HUD isn't working correctly, I guess it can be fixed by making new HUD or something.
-When Pinky is gibbed (i.e. with a shotgun at point blank range) it's body becomes transparent. Not a critical one though.
-SSG still uses ammo vanilla-style (i.e. not having a clip but extracting ammo directly from ammo counter)

And some more purely subjective complaints:
-Blood dripping sound is REALLY ANNOYING. It sounds too cartoony and jarring, not seeing why it had to be changed.
-One handed saw-off shotgun IMHO is vastly inferior to the traditional double barreled SG.
-I strongly dislike any kind of 'bling' so gold-plated pistol looks just wrong to me. I mean, why it couldn't be simply gun-metal gray? Or use sprites from Brutal Pistol, it looked way better.
-In general new SE(Not all but some of them) is less satisfying (in extreme cases, outright irritating) compared to the original sounds of Brutal Doom V19.
-Too many brain sprites after headshot. Looks and feels way too fake. Either make them smaller in size, or reduce it's quantity.

Despite everything I find this add-on quite enjoyable and very well done and hope that you will continue to explore your ideas for Brutal Doom.

Quaker540 Feb 10 2014, 1:58pm replied:

Firstly, thanks for your report! Well I'm here to talk about those little things;

1; What did you mean it doesn't work? Did you mean the numbers are strange etc.? What screen size do you have? (If you load GZDoom version on Zandronum, yes, this bug will appear.)

2; Can't notice that - Do you mean the Spectre? If so, this is already a feature.

3; I'll improve that!

1; I'm sorry, that was an old feature but I forgot to improve it, thanks for reminding me!

2; Yes, but does this sprite look pretty good?

3; I can see your point, I just wanted to make it like the Duke Nukem's Gold Pistol - There will be a mutator to bring the original sprites back.

4; - Since I don't understand where does this fit.

5; I'll try to make it realistic as soon as possible.

Thanks a lot for your comments, guys, I appreciate it a lot! Thanks again!

vladimireremeyev Feb 10 2014, 2:26pm replied:

1) Screen is 1080p, and yes, it's Zandronum.

2) No, I mean regular Pinky demon. Try shooting him at point blank range with SSG. Corpse appear slightly transparent. I'll experiment some more with settings, it's possibly that it happens only on my end.

3) Cool!
2)Can't argue with that, it does look better.
4)I'm gonna play it some more so I can give you a more detailed feedback.
5)Well it doesn't have to be realistic, something like original headshot effects in V19 is optimal I think. You should wait for more feedback from other users on this subject though. Perhaps others like it that way, I can live with that.

In the meantime I'll look for more bugs (if there's any) and/or strange working features and will report back here. Keep up the good work!

Quaker540 Feb 10 2014, 2:49pm replied:

Thanks! And about that HUD, you need to drag the "ZDM" file to play it without bugs - It will not include HD HUD, due to Zandronum is pretty much out-dated even in the 2.0 release. I highly recommend that you use GZDoom, to enjoy the latest, laggiest, bugless and cooler features. I appreciate that you are posting bugs - I'll try to fix them!

vladimireremeyev Feb 10 2014, 3:22pm replied:

I'll elaborate on my complaint about sounds.

Despite higher bitrate weapon sounds are lacking... how do I put it? They don't have certain sharpness. It sounds somewhat muffled and cheap or something. Also it's way too quiet. Because of that they doesn't sound satisfying enough.

It's not the case with some of the other guns however.
For example sound of the shotgun have this metal 'clank' noise that makes it sharp, which in turn makes it sound more real, more menacing, more powerful, more satisfying to shoot with. Same with pistol, semi-auto sounds lame but triple burst shot sounds way better.
Also, maybe it's because new sounds lack bass depth.
Try to experiment with it. Probably a good idea would be to take sound from something like Battlefield or Call of Duty, I distinctly remember them having good weapon sounds.

Also, sound of rotating barrels is too quiet, may be better to make it a bit louder too.

About transparent sprites:

On those screenshots you can clearly see that they are transparent.

And some last notes:
Heavy Weapon Guys for some reason drop both chaingun and minigun.

It would probably been better if pistol were dropped from zombies only if they make last stand.

Thanks again for your time.

P.S. Grenade throwing is awkward and a little bit uncomfortable for me. Dunno if that's limitation imposed by Doom engine or something.
Maybe main attack mode would be moderately-strong without charge throw and secondary attack will be charge feature instead?

Quaker540 Feb 10 2014, 3:44pm replied:

I think the sounds are great and the Pistol, is supposed to sound like that - The 3-Round-Burst needs to have a strong sound. And, I have a question, though; How can you say that the barrels are too quiet? When I throw an empty rocket chamber, the sound REALLY pierces my ear - In barrels is too quiet, maybe, but it's OK to avoid that irritating sound :P. And I'd like to add Call of Duty sounds, since there nice, but I don't have any Call of Duty since I hate it pretty much. And the bug with the Demon is probably your PC fault - Try refreshing the OpenGL options - I mean, disable all the features and then renable, I can't see that bug, it never happened to me. Also, Chaingunguy's throwing Miniguns with Chainguns is a feature - You can only obtain it by brutalizing him in pieces, it was supposed to be an Easter-Egg, but since you asked me... Well, the new sounds compared to vanilla BD are MUCH more better, BD used lots of really crappy and cheap sounds, at least in my opinion. Zombiemen were supposed to be drop pistols only with their Last Stand, but I'm really lazy to make a simple "Death" state :P Plus for me is unrealistic. If you had an Zombieman, and then you killed him, you could also pickup his weapons, for example, in his pocket don't you? That's why I put it! I'll try to make the sounds more satisfying, though.

First: What's up with brains in the new version? Not only they increased in amount dropped, they are XBOX HUEG, way bigger than monster's head. What's up with that?

New sounds work wonderfully though.
Assault rifle now is somewhat inferior to the pistol in terms of sound.
Maybe make it a few point louder add more bass depth and give it a small echo?
Same with Minigun, it sounds quieter than new chaingun.

+2 votes     reply to comment
Quaker540 Feb 12 2014, 5:27am replied:

Yes, only when the brains are hanged somewhere, other than that, they work nice. I'll fix that! And, Assault Rifle for me is NOT inferior, I mean, the sounds are pretty much more louder than the pistol ones - OK, the 3-Round-Burst needs to be louder than the Rifle since it explodes 3 projectiles, that's why it sounds more awesome! I'll try to more bass depth, to see if it's better. Well, the Minigun is MUCH more louder than the Chaingun, since it throws projectiles in a INSANE fire rate, I don't see the Chaingun louder. Oh, and here's what I done so far on this;

Added Ammo amount for SSG. (The only thing I done, since I worked on it for only 6 minutes!)

Today, I'll get back to work. Thanks for your feedback! :D

Well, I'm working on the new version, and here's what I have done so far;

Added Ammo amount for SSG in the Status Bar.
Improved Rifle Reload frames.
Improved Marines; Rocket Launcher marine bug causing him fire weirdly fixed, fixed unable to throw grenades, and punching a monster will no longer make the monster to disappear.
Fixed gore bugs making them incredibly huge; Now, only when they stick on a wall there will be a little bigger, for these reason; Realism. Making it stick on a wall and stretch, sounds more realistic instead of making it the same size. It will also leave blood later.
Improved burning barrel throwing and standing.
Changed Off-Sets for many sprites.
Zombieman will not spawn brains when he gets he's face exploded because that was stupid - Instead, it will spawn Teeth etc.

And still working on it! :D
