That's no good! You shouldn't be hiding ugliness with textures, but rather increasing the percieved detail and existing beauty of the model. If the model is ugly in some parts, by all means change it before texturing it.
The Keeper, Dreadnought, and Sajuuk are progenitor ships. I think their engine style can be applied to the slablike microliths we see in HW2, for which this seems to be modelled after.

I have never seen an modeled engine for progenitor ships!
