Description

The joint forces of the Coalition of Planets attack the Romulan fleet, initiating the Battle of Cheron.

The frequency of Romulan attacks dropped dramatically following the Liberation of Denobula, eventually reaching the point where weeks passed between sightings of Imperial warships. For a time, some dared to hope that perhaps the terrible conflict was over - maybe the Romulans had simply given up?

Though we can hardly blame the people of the time for having such hopes, they were of course completely baseless. The Romulan fleet that the Coalition had been battling for the last three years was undoubtedly exhausted, having suffered great losses at the Battle of Sol and the Siege of Andoria. But, to quote Commodore Archer, "They've worked too hard for too long to have just picked up their ball and gone home." The Romulan Star Empire had invested far too much into their plans to conquer the Coalition to have simply abandoned their campaign. Starfleet knew it wasn't over.

Debating what to do next, some in Starfleet called for a full-scale counterattack against the Romulan Empire. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed - at the time Starfleet did not even know the precise location of Romulus, let alone the layout of Romulan space or the strength and composition of the Imperial Navy. Any such offensive would certainly have resulted in disastrous failure.
