Always wondered why they used singularity drives instead, that makes a lot of sense.

Description

Romulan vessels keep a safe distance from a particle fountain, conducting a hazardous yet thorough study of the anomaly.

The Earth-Romulan War exposed a a great technological weakness in the Romulan Star Empire. Given the comparative scarcity of dilithium within Romulan space, matter/antimatter drives remained in their infancy in the Empire. Most Romulan ships continued to rely on conventional fusion reactors, limiting their effective range and the time they could spend in the field.

Had the Imperial Navy not been constrained by this technological hurdle, victory in the Earth-Romulan War would almost certainly have been theirs. Throughout the 23rd Century, extensive research was carried out devising new and often exotic means of powering Imperial starships and infrastructure. The Romulans had mixed success until the early 24th Century, when research into forced quantum singularities bore promising fruit.
