Love the backstory OrionSlaver, really puts her into the Star Trek timeframe well. Makes sense she was a more scientific ship changed into a warship due to the crisis at hand.

Description

USS Ares engages, and destroys, her first adversary.

The next generation of Federation starships had been on the drawing board well before the war started. The older ships in the fleet were struggling to keep up and nearing the end of their service lives, and while the current generation of starships were adequate, advancing technology showed that they would soon be left behind also. The first of Starfleet's next generation of advanced starships, the Artemis-class star cruiser was designed to carry Starfleet into the second half of the 23rd Century. The initial space frame for the Artemis was already under construction above Mars when the Klingons razed Arcanis.

As Starfleet's ships and equipment proved utterly outmatched against the Klingon war fleet, especially against their heavy D-6 battlecruisers, the need for new ships was made a priority. The Artemis-class was drastically redesigned. Greater emphasis was placed on agility and firepower. Powerful impulse engines, high capacity shields, the latest phasers designed by Andorian engineers, and six photon torpedo launchers (four forward, two aft) gave the new cruiser a formidable presence, at least on paper. The most battle-worthy starship ever built by Starfleet, the Artemis was renamed after an ancient Earth warrior deity - the Greek god of war, Ares.

The USS Ares was launched at the end of the war's second year, and immediately proved herself. The Ares' first field action pitted her one on one against a D-6 in orbit of the planet Pollux IV. In a pitched battle against one of the Klingons' heaviest warships, the Ares proved herself faster, more nimble and better armed, and won the battle decisively.

Two more Ares-class starships, the USS Athena and USS Apollo, were launched soon after. As Starfleet forces became better equipped, and with the Ares-class leading the charge in important engagements, the Klingons found themselves rapidly losing the advantage.
