The Barracuda SSN is the French Attack Submarine of the future.
The displacement of the submarine is the smallest among the nuclear attack submarine of the five permanent member of UN security council, displacing only 4765 (surfaced) to 5300 tons (submerged). And the submarine is not particularly fast, only 25 + knots max, submerged, compared to the norm of 30 + knots max. However, the ship packs a lot of punch in a small package, including the 32 pieces of an array of weapons. First, it carries the advanced F21 heavy torpedo, which is equipped with advanced signal processing technology and is essentially an unmanned underwater vehicle, capable of reaching 50 knots and a max range of 50 km. Then, it has the stealthy Storm Shadow cruise missile naval version, which is capable of reaching 1000+ km, in 800 km/h, carrying a warhead of 300 kg. One of the more interesting weaponry could be utilized by the submarine would be the torpedo launched version of Mica missiles, as part of the A3SM system. The system uses sonar to detect anti submarine helicopters using their dipping sonar, and then use the target information to guide a torpedo carrying a single MICA IR guided missile to the surface in the proximity of the helicopter. Then the missile is released into the air, and by IR guidance, the missile searches the sky for heat signatures from the helicopter to shoot it down. This weapon system, once installed on the Barracuda class submarines, would give it a fighting chance against the menacing ASW helicopter beneath the waves.
