Imagine a world where the Allies didn't win the war, nor did the Axis. Instead, the war just continued on and on in an unsteady stalemate. Welcome, to the world of 1949. In this world Germany decided not to bomb London, but instead continued its attacks on Britain's airfields. Then, the Russians lost at Kursk. Finally, D-Day fails. With these victories, Germany has managed to halt the Allie's progress. In the Western Theatre, the Allies and the Axis each plan the invasion of the other's vital territories. In the Pacific, Japan and the United States are dueling over tiny islands with giant fleets and atomic weapons. Now, the stalemate is about to be broken. Germany is preparing an all out invasion of Britain. As tough and valiant as the Allied troops defending the Sceptered Isle are, some of their leaders are beginning to that they will be unable to hold against the Wehrmacht.

These are Grenadiers, they aren't trained to fight in close quarters combat. The Volks do that for them

Aren't grenadiers usually close quarters style shocktroops?

In the 18th and 19th centuries, yes. In the German army of 1939-49, not so much. In this time period, Grenadier was the name given to Germany's basic infantry. Volksgrenadiers (English: Folk, or People's, grenadiers) were more typically assault/shock troops. The similarity of their name to the Volksturmm often gets them pegged as badly trained and incapable troops, when they actually seem to have been fine enough at their job. Anyway, there you have it.

You're on the right train, but you took a wrong track.
Volksgrenadiers are actually just grenadiers. CoH made the mistake of making them each their own units, but by '44, all "Grenadieredivisions" and "Infantriedivisions" were renamed to "Volksgrenadieredivisions" as a propaganda tool, making the emphasis on their "superiority" as German soldiery.

That weapon was invented to try and capitalize on Germany's diminishing resources in the real time-line. In this universe, such thrift is unnecessary. However, I won't say that it won't appear or that other advanced German small arms won't appear in some form.
