A class project in Navigation, Game features Audio only gameplay, to simulate being blind and is set in a Monty Python-ish comical world where a group of blind Monks are initiating you into their society by having you perform several audio navigatory task to help you learn to SEE with your EARS. Game Plays through in about half an hour. Created by Kyle Audick & Erik Carlson UCLA D|MA 2008

Now you can experience being blind by joining the Blind Monks Society. We welcome you all, the Thin, the Fat, the Tall. The short, the Angry, the Glad! We promise if you join you won't be mad. Our Leader, Brother Pancy Fants is a kind and gracious man who will not judge you on your outward appearance, mainly because he is blind, but also because he is the greatest man to stumble blindly across this world. He will teach you to See with your Ears and you will be very greatfull, OR ELSE!!!

The Blind Monk's Society is five week project in Navigation. Featuring Audio only navigation set in a Monty-Python-esk World of the Blind Monks. You will need to use your headphones to take the first stumbling steps as a blind person and eventually learn how to walk blindly with confidence. You will meet many Colorful characters on your quest to help the Society and learn to SEE with your EARS. This mod is available for Download Right HERE.

Why do I suspect a screamer?
Don't know what to do at the river, WHAT am I supposed to do exactly? I can barely hear what the guy say.
perhaps your volume is too low? But from the river you should walk with the river sounds in your left ear.
So this is a game made by blind people to make everyone experience what it is to be blind?
Now thats original and very interesting, I'll be playing this!

ok! I beat the first challenge.. I got so scared when the guy mentioned whipping out his shot gun so I ran off in some random direction than followed the bells back :D. The game really is something! I like it! how many challenges are there??

Very well done and great hilarious characters
You should consider making this a freeware game instead of a half life mod. I think this game would be highly appreciated by blind people but i dont think they will be getting HL2 just for that. So I strongly advise you to port this to a open source freeware engine (it would be easier to commercialize it that way too).

This sounded awesome. Too bad it was so short. And closing your eyes really helps.
Terrific Mod! I really enjoyed it. I think the concept worked very well and could have easily be a longer game; if you desire to continue with your project, that is.
seems odd. so do u just stare at a black screen while listening to ur headphones?
you can close your eyes or wear a blind fold if you like. I don't suggest gouging out your eyes, as the effects are a bit more permanent.

Fantastic idea, and some great writing too. :-) It's a bit trickier than normal on Vista, since Valve's headphone code doesn't work there, but dsp_enhance_stereo in the console helps.
(FYI devs: the download is far, far larger than it needs to be. Sounds can be compressed with 4-bit Microsoft ADPCM, which squashes them down to about a quarter of their original size!)

This is probably the most original mod i have ever seen!
